A look at some of the mat wrestling going on at the 1937 NCAA folkstyle wrestling championships. We see the use of butterfly guard, full guard , sweeps, back takes and more moves that we associate with modern grappling happening way back in 1937!
Of course although its surprising to see now at the time this was just how they wrestled!

I am still the only person in Australia to win an MMA fight and a championship title via a gogoplata submission set up from rubber guard. Eddie Bravo gave me a shoutout; the sequence was featured in his "Mastering the System" series, and for a while, it felt like rubber guard was going to be a significant part of my identity in this sport. I tell you that not to brag, but to make clear that when I say I no longer teach rubber guard, it is not because I never understood it or never made it work. I did.
