RACE REPORT BY Riccardo Benvenuti.
NSW Motor Race Championship – Round 1, Sydney Motorsport Park
The Superkarts delivered a fast, and highly competitive opening round at Sydney
Motorsport Park, with four races showcasing the outright speed of the 250s and the
depth of talent across the 125 classes. The weekend belonged to Brett Burvill, who
swept all four races with a combination of raw pace, consistency and race
management, but behind him the battles were intense, particularly among the 125
runners where positions changed constantly.
Qualifying set the tone early. Burvill immediately established himself as the
benchmark, punching out a 1:38.630 to take pole by a commanding 2.7 seconds
over fellow 250 competitor Paul Clark. The 125 field was tightly packed behind them,
with Jock Dos Santos, Mark Vickers, Stuart Robertson, Warren McGrouther and
Arthur Magaitis all within a narrow window. Laurie Fooks, who would become a
major factor across the weekend, was unable to set a time in the session but would
quickly make his presence felt once racing began. The spread between the top 250s
and the leading 125s was clear, but the intraclass competition promised a strong
weekend.
Race 1 delivered a clean and decisive start to the round. Burvill immediately
controlled the front, stretching a gap and setting a 1:37.367 fastest lap — the
quickest of the weekend to that point. Clark held second comfortably, but the
standout performance came from Fooks, who charged through the field to finish third
outright and first in the 125 class. Behind him, McGrouther, Vickers, Robertson and
Magaitis were locked in a tight battle, swapping positions repeatedly. Trimmer, Levis,
Dodge and Horswell formed the next group, running nosetotail for much of the race.
Dos Santos, despite strong pace, lost time late and slipped down the order. Caffrey
and Levis both retired, while Tinsley and Fyfe completed the 125 finishers.
Race 2 produced a similar pattern at the front, with Burvill and Clark again running in
formation. Clark set the fastest lap of the race with a 1:38.914, but Burvill’s
consistency kept him clear. The 125 battle was even more dynamic than Race 1.
Trimmer delivered one of his strongest drives of the weekend to finish third outright
and first in class, while Fooks, Dos Santos, Vickers and McGrouther all traded
positions across the fivelap sprint. Magaitis, Robertson and Levis were close behind,
with Dodge and Horswell rounding out the main pack. Caffrey again struck trouble,
retiring after two laps, while Tinsley, Fyfe and Porscha Levis completed the finishers.
Race 3 was the fastest race of the round, with Burvill lowering the benchmark to a
stunning 1:35.382 — the quickest lap recorded across all four races. Clark again
finished second, but the gap between the two 250s widened as Burvill’s pace
advantage became more pronounced. Fooks continued his strong form with another
third outright, while Trimmer, Vickers and Dos Santos engaged in a tight threeway
fight for the next positions. Magaitis, Robertson, Horswell and Levis formed the next
group, with Dodge just behind. Caffrey completed six laps before retiring, while Fyfe,
Tinsley and McGrouther rounded out the 125 finishers.
Race 4 closed the weekend with another commanding performance from Burvill,
who completed the clean sweep. Clark again finished second, while Fooks capped
off a superb weekend with third outright and another class win. Vickers and Dos
Santos crossed the line in a near deadheat for fourth and fifth, separated by just
0.058 seconds. Magaitis, Levis, Robertson, Dodge and Horswell completed the main
pack. Fyfe, Tinsley and Porscha Levis all finished strongly, while McGrouther was
classified after a fivelap run and a twolap penalty.
Across all four races, Burvill was untouchable, Clark was consistently second best,
and Fooks emerged as the standout of the 125 field. With tight racing, constant
position changes and strong class battles, the Superkarts delivered a highquality
start to the 2026 season.
