What is a BO from the "You want to learn Kobudo Series"
It all starts with the BO, this comes in all shapes and sizes in our case we use the Roku shaku bō which is 6feet or in Australia 182cm and generally its comes in three styles, too pick Thick in the middle thin at the end, round and my favourite octagonal. We train with real hardwood Bo not plastic or other through extensive two person drills.

Why learn weapons if you can't carry them in the street from the "You want to learn Kobudo Series"
By learning and understanding each weapons fundamentals, we also learn how these fundamental can be applied building essential physical and mental skills allowing self-Defense with Everyday Objects much like they were adapted Historically. ie what ever is at hand (pen, umbrella etc) for both attack and defence of other weapons.
All that said, the base truth is this, this is not the weapon, you are the weapon and this is an extension of self.

Blog page below

Shu Ha Ri Shu-Ha-Ri (守破離) is a Japanese martial arts and philosophy concept that describes the three stages of learning and mastering a skill. 守 Shu (Follow) – Follow the form. Learn the fundamentals. 破 Ha (Break) – Understand the principles. Find your own way. 離 Ri (Transcend)…

Sen no sen (先の先) 15/07/2026

I was asked the question earlier this week about the fine line between not striking first (defence) and being preemptive. This led me back to Sen no sen. link below

Sen no sen (先の先) Sen no sen (先の先) is a Japanese martial arts concept that translates to 'attacking the initiative.' It refers to the strategy of reading your opponent's intention and launching your counter-attack at the exact same moment they begin their offensive, intercepting them before their strike lands.
