Congratulations to Taylor Doyle for winning the Hawkesbury All Abilities Sports Person of the Year Award for 2017. This caps off an exciting 12 months where Taylor came back from surgery to win a silver medal and now this recognition tonight. Well done Taylor you are truly inspiring.

Dear Members

The ground was opened this afternoon but has not been mowed anor line marked. Our friends at little As have taken care of the inside line of the circular track and marked 6 lanes on the circular finish straight. The modified program will be.

Track

2pm - 100 metres

Field

Shotput
Discus
Javelin

Cross Country

3pm - 2km and 4km

Cross country runners note the start time in 3pm not the usual 4pm.

Michael Grogan is at Masters and I have to be in Wollongong before 6pm so we will be finishing before 4pm. I will need help to set up and pack away.

Field events will commence at 2.15pm and continue concurrently with the cross country until complete.

Thanks

Dear Members,

C V Kelly Park is still closed. It may reopen tomorrow but that decision won't be made by Council until some time through the day and dependent upon the state of the ground and the weather. Possible light showers are forecast for tomorrow. If the Council website is not updated by 3pm it won't change. To search Google Holroyd ground closures. It will take you to the old Holroyd Council website.

So where does that leave us?

At this stage we don't know whether the ground will reopen before the weekend or not. Secondly, if it does there may not be enough time to line mark.

1. If the ground is open and lines are marked athletics will be on.

2. If the ground is open but no lines are marked we will do field events and cross country.

3. If the ground remains closed we will do the Snake Run (2km and 4km) at Gipps Road Sporting Complex at Greystanes.

Whichever option eventuates we will start at 2pm.

Watch this space for more information.

Regards

Wayne

Dear members and friends

The mercury is tipped to hit 43 degrees tomorrow. Accordingly athletics is cancelled and this week's program will be postponed for a fornight. Next week's program will be our modified program due to the little A's region championships.

This week at the GAC Committee meeting your committee decided to adopt the Little Athletics NSW method of measuring temperature to determine whether competition should be suspended or cancelled.

Instead of suspending or cancelling competition when the temperature hits 40 degrees we will measure the ambient temperature which is a combination of the temperature and humidity. This means that if the humidity is high we may suspend competition when the mercury gets to 36 or 37 degrees. Why is this you ask? On higher humidity days you might hear weather measure as 37 degrees but also hear the term it feels like 40 degrees. Based on tomorrow's forecast of 43 degrees and humidity of 38 percent the ambient temperature will be over 46 degrees.

Ambient temperature is a much safer measure for our athletes and guests. I have been using this measure over the last month and it has helped me make some good decisions regarding competition. For example the last two cross country races have been cancelled although other competition continued. On the first occasion we cancelled the 1500 metre race as well but ran the 800 metres. Everyone who ran the 800 metres that day indicated how hard that event had been and that the conditions would not have made the 1500 a safe race.

I apologise for any inconvenience that may be caused but YOUR safety is at the forefront of my mind.

If you are looking for a run tomorrow then an early morning one is the best option. Why don't you join us at Rooty Hill parkrun for Dave Otte's and Michael Free's 100th parkrun. I can guarantee its going to be a warm one but it will be safer than running later in the day and we will be giving out free Zooper Doopers and chilled water after the event before we go to Jaz My Waffles for breakfast.

Due to the weather our program has changed. We will run the 800 but not the 1500 nor the cross country 2km or 4km. We apologise for the inconvenience but our members' health and safety is paramount.

Dear members and friends,

Girraween Athletics cross country scheduled for today (Saturday 6.01.17) at C V Kelly Park has been cancelled due to the state of the ground after this week's rain. We apologise for the inconvenience.

As a consolation if you are prepared to travel up to Kings Langley you may join us for a 2km and 5km run along the M7 Cycleway. The 2km will be at 2pm and the 5km at 2.30pm. We will meet before each race in Lady Penhryn Park beside Jubilee Close which runs off Shanke Crescent.

Regards
Wayne

It was great to have Paralympic Silver Medallist and GAC athlete Taylor Doyle drop down to our Saturday afternoon competition to receive recognition for such an amazing performance in Rio. She was presented with an etched glass trophy and a gift voucher. Taylor did little A's at Girraween until she moved away but has remained a loyal member of our club ever since. She thanked us for our loyal support of her and hopes to get down to the ground to compete later in the season.
