Join the USYD SPIE–Optica Student Chapter for an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of cutting-edge optics research labs!
This event will give you the chance to explore three different optics labs across campus, meet the people behind the research, and get a glimpse into the technologies shaping the future of photonics. Whether you’re curious about lasers, imaging, or optical systems, this is a great opportunity to see real research in action and ask questions in an informal setting.
After the tours, we’ll wrap up with a free barbecue—come along to relax, chat, and connect with fellow students and researchers.
Spots are limited, so make sure to register to secure your place!

Hi everyone
The next
Physics Connect (evening edition) is about working in high tech industry.
We have an amazing panel lined up:
Calida Tang - Chief of Staff at Iceberg Quantum, a new USYD quantum computing company. Calida
did a double degree (Science/Law) and has worked in a variety of roles which use both degrees.
Jacob Richter - is the CTO of Propeller Aero, which does drone mapping and
analysis. He has also worked a consultant and software engineer.
Joe Zaragri- is a senior engineer in optical instrumentation at Coherent, and previously worked
in a number of optics-based roles, including 18 months as a LIDAR scientist in Antarctica. He has promised lots of slides of iceberg and penguins!
Xiaoli Tang is a photonics engineer at Deteqt. Xiaoli is a start-up specialist- she worked
in photonics applications from systems for autonomous cars, mechanisms to charge drones while they are in the air, to her current role in quantum sensing.
I think it will be a brilliant event, with pizza at the end- so come along hungry and with plenty of questions.
Event Details:
Date: 18 May
Time: 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm
Location: Slade Lecture Theatre (217) University of Sydney Physics Building
everyone is welcome!
