You can’t take your bar velocity tracker onto the platform with you, bro.

I WILL *insert action* BECAUSE I AM *insert quality or characteristic*

We can relate this to all things in our life, but I think it captures the training realm particularly well.

If you view yourself as someone capable of a particular title, or goal, the work to get there must be at the forefront of your thought process.

I see too many lifters struggle with the concept of doing hard s**t, whether it be training or diet, but they still view themselves as someone who deserves to achieve their goal. This is backwards thinking in my mind.

World champions likely don’t miss training sessions, or sandbag accessory work, or skimp out on sleep or protein intake. To be perfectly clear, it’s okay to do these things but your goals need to align accordingly.

If you tell yourself you are, you must be willing to do.

While it’s fun to get caught in the weeds of biomechanics and technique, at the end of the day this sport is very simple.

The longer I coach, the more I get back to simplicity when teaching technique.

Powerlifters love to tell you all the reasons why they didn’t complete a lift, or why the referees gave them red lights.

The reality is; a made lift is a made lift, and a missed lift is a missed lift. There are no pictures on the scorecard.

If you picked the wrong number, misgrooved your attempt, or didn’t convince the referees, the scoresheet doesn’t care.

You’re in control of your destiny. Instead of making excuses, improve your decision making and your ex*****on, instead. Your total will thank you for it.

If you want to reach your potential in powerlifting, you need to be in it for years and years.

As time goes along, things are going to pop up that get in the way of your progress. Life stress, injuries, plateaus, dips in motivation, and so on. If you can’t persevere through these times and continue to do the work, you will be left behind.

Getting really strong isn’t supposed to be easy. You’ll need to do endure some hard s**t, at times. This might mean pushing your training to a new level, being stricter with diet, rehabbing through an injury or sacrifice things in your personal life,

The best will do whatever is required. If you want to be the best; you have to, too.

Too many lifters fall short of having a great meet day because they, or their coaches, aren’t willing to be flexible enough with their competition plan. They have this ideal day in their head, or written on their competition plan, and they aren’t willing to budge from it and play to the conditions.

But, here’s the thing: the competition plan is meaningless once the day begins. I legitimately don’t even look at what I’ve written once my lifters take the platform. The competition plan unfolds in front of your eyes.

There’s certain things that can’t be written into a plan; your lifters mannerisms, their words, their confidence, the bar speed, any sticking points, how the meet is being refereed, or even the conditions of the day. Being aware of these things can turn a good performance into a great one. The context of the day itself is even more pertinent when you’re in a close battle and you have a scoreboard and other lifters to observe, too.

The best data is the most recent data. Watch what’s in front of you and make your best judgement. If you know your lifters well, you won’t have to refer back to your competition plan.
