The way a joint moves is influenced by its structure, as well as the surrounding ligaments, tendons, and the individual's unique physiology.
This is why understanding anatomy goes beyond simply knowing where a muscle starts and finishes. We need to consider the joint structure and surrounding structure, tissue capacity, and individual physiology when we assess movement and select exercises.

Ultimately, it's these factors that help determine how a joint truly moves—and how we should train within the parameters given and how we should push those parameters.

Structural integrity is the capacity of a structure to maintain an effective position while managing mechanical load throughout movement.

Using the high-bar squat as an example, we’re looking at the relationship between axial loading and lower-limb positioning, while considering the position and interaction of the ankles, knees, hips, and torso throughout the movement.

We’re considering how an individual's unique structure influences their ability to organise, control, and tolerate mechanical loading through the movement.

💥 Improve how much your body can take

💥Everyone will adapt slightly different

💥Tendons, ligaments and cartilage take a lot longer to adapt to training load and stimulus

💥Muscles, bone, fascia and the nervous system adapt faster

Direct approach -
💥 Assess the overall load the tissue/structure is/was going through
💥Assess the movement quality
💥Improve tissue capacity and movement quality

Indirect approach -
💥 Assess the strength, mobility and flexibility further up or down the chain and improve the capacity where needed
