Funny how the body stiffens up after sitting for a while…
A lot of people notice it getting up from a chair, out of the car, or first thing in the morning.
Most of the time, it’s not something going wrong — it’s just the joints asking to be moved.
Gentle, regular movement really does make a difference.
I write a short weekly newsletter with simple tips like this, based on what comes up in class.

Exercise isn’t just about building strength or preventing falls—it’s a game-changer for your brain health too! 💪🧠
Research from *The Lancet Public Health* (Livingston et al., 2020) shows regular physical activity reduces the risk of dementia by 30% and Alzheimer’s disease by 45%. 🌟 The World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines on risk reduction for cognitive decline also emphasize the protective power of staying active.
Staying physically active is one of the simplest ways to support both your body *and* your mind. Let’s keep moving! 🌿

A really simple trick to teach people not to 'fold their body over' when they squat is to get them to put their arms over their heads.
We practise this every now and then so they can feel what it's like to not lean forward when squatting
Older people generally have a more limited ROM through the spine because the discs start to shrink as we age, so they're unlikely to get a nice curve through the thoracic. We don't try to force things that aren't realistic.
A couple of the participants have shoulder issues, (very common in older people), so they can only have their arms at shoulder level because the whole shoulder complex needs a functioning rotator cuff to stay stable once the arms go higher.
