The Australian Government has updated its exercise guidelines, and there's an important message for all of us, particularly as we move through midlife and beyond.
The new recommendations still encourage regular exercise and strength training, yet there is now a much greater emphasis on mobility, balance and coordination, with adults encouraged to work on these at least three times each week.
Why? Because healthy ageing isn't just about fitness. It's about being able to move well, stay steady on your feet, carry shopping, get up and down from the floor and continue doing the things you love for years to come.
The good news is that many of these qualities are already built into Yoga, Reformer Pilates, Mat Pilates, Barre, Strength and Aerobics classes.
Perhaps the most important takeaway is this: variety matters. Strength, flexibility, balance, mobility and cardiovascular fitness all play a role in keeping you strong, capable and independent.
As we often say, listen to your body. Some days you may need strength, other days mobility, balance work or simply the chance to slow down and breathe.
A healthy body isn't built from one type of exercise. It's built from a variety of movement over time.

One of the biggest myths in fitness is that you need to find the one perfect form of exercise.

Your body thrives on variety.
Some days you need strength. Other days you need mobility, balance, flexibility or a chance to simply move and de-stress. Each type of movement gives you something different, and together they help you build a stronger, more capable body.
That's why we encourage people to mix things up rather than doing the same thing over and over.
A little yoga. Some Pilates. A strength class. A walk with a friend.
Variety keeps your body challenged, your mind engaged, and makes it far more likely you'll keep moving long term.
After all, anything is better than nothing, and variety is key.
