One thing we’re particularly passionate about at Socceroos Active is the development of a loyalty program for football supporters — recognising those who regularly get behind our national teams, both here in Australia and abroad.

A loyalty system is simple: attend games, earn points. The more you attend, the more points you earn — with those who have the most points getting priority access to tickets for World Cups and other major events.

It’s not a complicated concept and similar programs have been successfully adopted across Europe, yet Australia has never really embraced it.

An Open Statement to Channel 7

Channel 7, this is embarrassing.

During June and July this year, thousands of Australian football fans travelled across North America to support the Socceroos. We spent our own money, took annual leave and travelled thousands of kilometres to cheer on the boys representing our nation against the world's best.

Let's make no mistake... this is football. The world game. The game played and loved by billions across the globe.

We witnessed incredible scenes as Australians united, both at home and abroad, to get behind the green and gold. The passion, atmosphere and unwavering support were something every Australian could be proud of.

And you were there.

You shared a BBQ with supporters in Texas. You joined our chants in Seattle. You nearly did a shoey in Vancouver. Your reporters experienced first-hand the passion, colour and culture that football supporters bring.

Which makes it all the more disappointing to now see Channel 7 using footage of football supporters to promote its rugby league coverage.

Those scenes have nothing to do with rugby league. They were captured while thousands of Australians followed the Socceroos around North America.

Using them to promote another sport is misleading, lazy and disrespectful—not because football supporters "own" those moments, but because it misrepresents what viewers are actually seeing.

Australian football has fought for recognition for decades. It deserves to be acknowledged for what it is, not used as a backdrop to promote another code.

Do better, Channel 7.
