When we run into the surf and negotiate the sud break we employ the skills of wading and porpoising to get thru broken waves and in shallow waters.
To porpoise and get through under a broken wave in shallow waters, we dive hands first under the incoming whitewater by planting and sometime hooking our hands into the sand beneath the whitewater.
This in effect helps hold our bodies at that spot as the wave passes over us. In order to move forward again we need to draw our lower half of our bodies between our hands that are hooked into the sand so we can step out feet between our hands an proceed with jumping up to the surface and help us to lunge or even dive forward again into another porpoise.
Landing our hands and feet on the sand even in the water is definitely having a grounding effect!
Another good reason to practice proper surf negotiating skills - instead of merely walking and flopping in the water for our next swim!
