PT4: For years, she had worn white. Today, she wore black.

The letter had confirmed his death, though it offered little explanation. No final words. No belongings. Not even a body to bring home.

The funeral was quiet. She stood beside the empty coffin, listening as strangers spoke of a man they barely knew.

She didn’t cry. She hadn’t cried since opening the letter.

But as the last mourner walked away, a man she had never seen before approached her.

He looked at the grave, then back at her.

“There’s something you need to know about your husband.”

The letter remained unopened for three days. She had waited years for news of her husband, yet now that it had finally arrived, she was terrified of what it might say. As long as the envelope remained sealed, he could still be alive. Still fighting. Still finding his way home. She continued her daily ritual, dressing in white and returning to the place where she had last watched him disappear into the distance. But something had changed. For the first time, she no longer searched the horizon for his silhouette. Instead, she sat quietly, the letter resting in her lap, wondering how long a person could live between hope and heartbreak. That evening, as the sun began to set, she finally broke the seal. And by morning, the woman who had waited for him would be gone too.

The days turned into months, and the months into years, yet still she returned to the place where she had promised to wait. Her white dress, once a symbol of love and new beginnings, had become a reminder of everything time had taken from her. The townspeople no longer asked about her husband. Some offered pity, others whispered that grief had stolen her mind. But she paid them no attention. She had begun to forget the sound of his laughter, the warmth of his hands, even the exact shade of his eyes. And that frightened her more than the thought of his death. So each afternoon, she closed her eyes and imagined him walking towards her, just as he had promised. Until one evening, a stranger appeared at her door, carrying something she hadn’t seen in years. An envelope bearing her husband’s handwriting.

Every afternoon, she returned to the same spot, where the dust settled and the horizon stretched endlessly before her. It had been three years since she kissed her husband goodbye and watched him leave for war, promising he would return before the seasons changed. The seasons had come and gone, the letters had stopped, and the townspeople had quietly begun to speak of him in the past tense. But she refused to mourn a man whose death had never been confirmed. So she waited, dressed in the same ivory lace she had worn on their wedding day, listening for footsteps that never came. They called her foolish, perhaps even mad. But she had made him a promise too. If he ever found his way home, she would be there waiting.
