When Life Calms Down…”
I can’t tell you how many times over the years I’ve heard some version of:
“I really want to focus on myself again… I just need life to calm down first.”
I’ve said it too.
Especially at this time of year!
You think, once I get through this busy patch, I’ll get back into it.
But then work ramps up… family commitments appear… routines change… someone needs you… the dog needs to go to the vet. 😂
And somehow you slide straight back to the bottom of your own list.
After 16+ years of coaching men and women over 40 who are trying to juggle their health with everything else life throws at them, here’s something I’ve learned:
If you’re waiting for life to calm down, you could be waiting a very lonnng time.
September becomes October.
October becomes Christmas.
Then you wake up and somehow it’s NEXT YEAR! 😳
The people I see staying strong, energised and capable aren't necessarily the ones with fewer commitments.
They've simply found a way to make looking after themselves fit into their real life.
Not the perfect week.
Not the quiet week.
Their actual messy, busy, unpredictable life.
That's what makes it stick.
Because training after 40 isn't supposed to take over your life.
It's supposed to help you keep saying YES to it.
If you've been telling yourself “I'll start when things settle down”, maybe this is your sign to stop waiting.

CHICKEN BREAST DOESN’T HAVE TO TASTE LIKE CARDBOARD 😅
Chicken breast has a bit of a reputation…
✅ Healthy✅ High in protein✅ Easy to meal prep❌ Dry, chewy and boring as hell 😂
But here’s the thing…
Chicken isn’t the problem. How you’re cooking it might be.
So as part of our Back to Basics September, I’ve put together a FREE Chicken Breast Cheat Sheet for busy men and women over 40 who want to eat better without spending half their life in the kitchen.
Inside I’ll show you 3 simple, no-fail ways to cook juicy, tender chicken:
🍗 The “Walk-Away” Method🔥 High-Heat Sheet Pan Chicken💦 Quick Brine + Sear
Plus, the 3 little things that make a BIG difference between juicy chicken and the stuff you need half a bottle of sauce just to swallow. 😂
Simple food. Plenty of protein. Easy meal prep.
Because eating well after 40 doesn’t need to be complicated — and it definitely doesn’t need to be boring.
👇 Comment “CHOOK” below and I’ll send you your FREE copy.
Back to Basics. Keep it simple. Make it sustainable. 💪🍗

BACK TO BASICS — DAY 1 🌱
It's not just WHAT you eat. WHEN you eat may matter too.
There's an area of research called chrononutrition, which looks at how the timing of our meals interacts with our body's internal clock.
Research suggests that, for many people, glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity are generally better earlier in the biological day and lower later at night.
Does that mean eating dinner after 7pm automatically makes you gain fat?
No.
Your overall calorie intake, protein, food quality, activity, sleep and consistency still matter far more than obsessing over the clock.
But it does give us something practical to think about.
Instead of under-eating all day and arriving home starving at night:
✅ Get some quality protein into your first meals✅ Make lunch a proper meal rather than an afterthought✅ Spread your protein across the day✅ Try not to save the majority of your food for late at night✅ And if you train later in the day, fuel and recover appropriately
That's Back to Basics.
We're not trying to find the perfect eating window.
We're trying to build an eating pattern you can consistently follow that supports your strength, energy, body composition and health.
👉 Swipe through the carousel and save it for later.

If you're a woman over 40 whose belly can look completely different from morning to night… it might not be a change in belly fat. Here’s what could be going on. 👇
If your belly is relatively flat in the morning but noticeably puffier or tighter later in the day, bloating or abdominal distension may be playing a role.
And while bloating and belly fat can exist together, they’re not the same thing — and they don’t necessarily have the same solution.
Here’s a simple way to think about it:
👉 Body fat doesn't noticeably appear and disappear during the day. Changes in body fat happen gradually over time.
👉 Bloating can come and go. It may change after meals, with certain foods or drinks, constipation, hormonal changes or even stress. Your stomach may also feel tight or uncomfortable.
Why does knowing the difference matter?
Because if every time your stomach looks bigger you assume you've gained fat and respond by eating less and exercising more, you may be trying to fix the wrong problem.
Reducing excess body fat is more about the long game:
✅ Regular strength training✅ Eating enough protein and mostly nutritious whole foods✅ An appropriate calorie intake for your goals✅ Daily movement✅ Good sleep and stress management
Bloating may respond better to:
✅ Noticing whether particular foods or drinks trigger symptoms✅ Getting enough fibre and fluids — while increasing fibre gradually✅ Eating more slowly and chewing your food properly✅ Regular movement✅ Managing stress and looking after your gut health
And during perimenopause and menopause, changes in hormones, digestion and body composition can make things feel even more confusing.
So don't judge your progress by how your stomach happens to look at 7pm after a full day of eating.
Look at the trend over weeks and months, not one moment in the mirror.
💡 Save this for the next time your belly seems to have a mind of its own.

PUT THE “BIG MO” TO WORK FOR YOU 💪
With the September school holidays coming up, routines are about to get disrupted.
Maybe you’re heading away.
Maybe the grandkids are staying over.
Maybe your normal training, walking or eating routine just gets turned upside down for a couple of weeks.
And when I’m coming back from a holiday, I know one thing to be true…
Getting back into your old routine can be HARD!
But I also know something else:
Once I get the “Big Mo” working for me, everything starts getting easier.
Big Mo = MOMENTUM.
You’ve probably heard the saying:
A body at rest stays at rest, and a body in motion stays in motion.
It comes from Newton’s First Law of Motion — and while we’re not physics experiments 😄, it’s a pretty good analogy for our habits.
The hardest part is often getting started.
That first workout back.
That first morning walk.
That first healthy meal.
But then you do another…and another.
Before long, you’re back in motion.
So whether you’re coming back from the school holidays, restarting after a few weeks off, or thinking about becoming more active after 40…
Don’t wait until you feel motivated.
Take the first step and let momentum help create the motivation.
Start small.Get moving.Build momentum.Keep the Big Mo working for you.
That’s another way we can work smarter, not harder.
💪 If you’re a man or woman over 40 looking to build strength, fitness and mobility so you can enjoy life now AND in the future, follow Personal Best 40+ Fitness & Rehab for more simple, practical strategies.
Train for today. Prepare for future you.

🎥 QUICK-CAST: CREATINE AFTER 40
Creatine isn’t just for bodybuilders. 💪🧠
It’s one of the most researched supplements around, and for men and women over 40 it may help support:
✅ Strength and muscle
✅ Training performance and recovery
✅ Healthy ageing and maintaining function
✅ Brain energy and cognitive health — an exciting area of ongoing research
How much?
For most people, 3–5g of creatine monohydrate daily is a great starting point. Consistency matters more than timing.
In this Quick-Cast I explain why I use creatine, when I take it, and why it could be worth considering as we get older.
👉 Watch the video for the full rundown.
As always, if you have kidney/liver disease, diabetes, take regular medications, or have medical concerns, check with your doctor before adding a supplement.
Train for today. Train for future you. 💪
