Look Beyond the Trophies: Choose the Right Coach for Your Child
I have been coaching for more than 30 years, with experience in Japan for 3 years, Brazil for 6 years, my home country, and Australia, my chosen home, for nearly 25 years. Over that time, I have seen a lot.
There are hundreds of coaches who take a very short-term approach, chasing the next medal at all costs β and unfortunately, the cost is often paid by the child.
The pressure, the constant yelling, the swearing, the fear of making mistakes and the obsession with winning can become part of a young player's everyday experience.
Yes, these coaches may win trophies and achieve short-term success. But we need to ask: success for whom?
When the coach becomes the centre of everything, it can stop being about the children and start being about the coach's own reputation, ego and trophy cabinet.
Parents need to be aware of this and protect their children from coaching environments that are abusive, intimidating or excessively focused on winning.
When choosing an academy or coach, look beyond the trophies.
Look at the coach's qualifications, experience, history and reputation. Look at how they treat young players. Look at whether they develop players over the long term rather than simply selecting the strongest players and trying to win the next tournament.
And most importantly, ask yourself:
How many players have actually developed under this coach and gone on to succeed when it matters most β at senior level?
Youth football is not about winning every game at all costs. It is about developing players, building confidence, teaching resilience, allowing children to make mistakes and helping them fall in love with the game.
Winning is part of football. It should never come at the expense of a child's development, confidence or enjoyment of the game.
Choose a coach who is thinking about where your child can be in 5, 10 or 15 years, not just what they can win this weekend.
