Meet Piotr Babis - the Quiet Achiever of Tasmania’s trails.

Originally from Poland and now a Park Ranger based at Fortescue Bay, Piotr Babis has built a reputation as one of Australia’s most understated yet formidable ultra-runners. He has taken on some of Tasmania’s most demanding trails and Fastest Known Time (FKT) challenges, including the 240km Southwest Traverse and his ambitious β€œImpossible 7” project.

Now Piotr is stepping into something new: the inaugural Run Tasmania Stage Race, taking place from 25–28 November 2026 across Hobart, Kunanyi / Mount Wellington and the Tasman Peninsula.

For Piotr, the appeal is close to home - quite literally.

Q1. YOU SPEND MORE TIME IN THE TASMANIAN BUSH THAN ALMOST ANYONE. HOW DOES YOUR DAILY CONNECTION TO THIS LAND CHANGE THE WAY YOU APPROACH A RACE LIKE RUN TASMANIA?
β€œI think I am more aware of the trails and nature around me. It would be great to race the trails I used for my daily runs.”

Q2. WHAT IS THE ONE "HIDDEN GEM" OF THE TASMAN PENINSULA TRAILS THAT COMPETITORS SHOULD KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR DURING THE RACE?
β€œKeep an eye for echidnas, especially around Cape Raoul Track.”

Q3. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST LESSON THE TASMANIAN TRAILS HAVE TAUGHT YOU?
β€œPatience. Trails in Tas are often challenging and hard going. You usually need more time than it might seem to cover them.”

Q4. STAGE RACING IS AS MUCH ABOUT THE COMMUNITY AS IT IS ABOUT THE KM’S ON THE TRAIL. WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT THE SOCIAL-SIDE OF THIS EVENT?
β€œTaking the most of both. I am looking forward to meeting other runners and having lots of fun on the trails.”

Q5. WHY WAS NOW THE RIGHT TIME TO SIGN UP FOR A STAGE RACE SUCH AS THE INAUGURAL RUN TASMANIA STAGE RACE?
β€œI have never done a stage race. Having one, literally on my doorstep was a good time to try something new. And the end of November is where I start my preparation for the new season, so it's also a great way to kick it off.”

Q6. WHY IS THE RUN TASMANIA STAGE RACE THE PERFECT WAY TO EXPERIENCE THE "WILD HEART" OF THE STATE?
β€œRun Tasmania picked some of the best trails on Kunyani, in Hobart and surrounds. It offers amazing diversity within only 90min of driving.”

And his advice for anyone preparing for their first Tasmanian stage race…

β€œEnjoy the process.”

That might sound simple. But the reward is a spectacular journey through four very different worlds: coastal trails, alpine terrain, rainforest and the dramatic clifftops of Cape Raoul.
Will you join Piotr for the adventure?

CONGRATULATION 2026 RUN LARAPINTA RUNNERS... YOU’VE DONE IT!!

Four days ago, we stood together at the Old Telegraph Station with fresh legs, over-glycogen-ed quadriceps and a healthy amount of nervous anticipation.

Today, at Ellery Creek Waterhole, we stood together again...

Only now there were finish-line hugs, dust-caked shoes, very tired smiles and a whole lot of people who know themselves, and each other, far, far better than they did on Day 1.

The final stage gave us everything we could have hoped for from a Run Larapinta finale – tough running, 360 degree views from Counts Point, running above the endless abyss of Serpentine Gorge and a post race BBQ and swim at the oasis-like Ellery Creek Waterhole.

Runners crossed the final finish line with every version of emotion: relief, pride, exhaustion, joy, disbelief and the occasional urgent longing for a chair. They finished with new friends, old friends, family and the kind of shared stories that will grow taller every time they are retold.

To every runner who started this journey, THANK YOU.

THANK YOU for choosing adventure. THANK YOU for bringing your grit, humour and generous spirit to the Red Centre. THANK YOU for cheering, encouraging, sharing the hard moments and making this event the special little travelling community that it is.

We are beyond proud of you all and honoured to have shared the journey with you.

Three days in and the red centre still makes us gasp.

Sometimes it is because the scenery is extraordinary...
Sometimes it is because the climbs are extraordinarily steep...
Today, at Run Larapinta, it was very much both.

Stage 3 took runners from the Birthday Waterhole area towards Standley Chasm – this starts with the unique opportunity to run on a flat, wide and rock free section of 4WD track that was made adventurous with 4 river crossings – the last one being waste deep! A unique, and very special, aspect of this year’s race has been the amount of water in the landscape with water holes and river beds alive with water as a result of the wet summer the Red Centre experienced. This has made it green and full of life.

Then came Brinkley Bluff – the highest point of the entire course. For both Malbunka and Namatjira runners, the route climbs 550m in just 3km with zig-zags, false summits and rock scrambling that tests even the strongest runners. But when the Chewings Range opens out beneath you and the continent seems to stretch forever, the hard work suddenly makes a lot of sense.

What stood out most today was not just the scale of the landscape, or the strength required to move through it. It was the way this group keeps showing up for one another.

3 days ago they were strangers, now a trail family – cheers for every finisher, no matter the placing. Exhausted bodies still finding the energy to celebrate someone else’s good day. What a team!

One stage to go, runners. Tomorrow brings the ochres, the ridgelines, Counts Point, Serpentine Gorge and the final finish line at Ellery Creek Waterhole.

Go eat. Go rest. Tomorrow, we celebrate.

The desert has teeth!

If Day 1 was the teaser, Day 2 of Run Larapinta was the full monty – with the outback revealing all it's "faces" to runners (both naughty and nice!)...

The Malbunka runners set out from Simpsons Gap for 41km of proper Red Centre trail running: open country, rough ground, rocky ridges, huge views and a descent that required equal parts concentration, patience and very reliable ankles.

Meanwhile, the Namatjira runners tackled 20km from Standley Chasm, climbing their way onto the High Route before heading out along the Chewings Range. It is the kind of terrain that asks you to look where you are putting your feet, then somehow also look up because the scenery is too good to miss.

There were steep climbs. There were loose rocks. There was wind and RAIN!! But there was also everything we love about this race... People waiting at the top of a climb to cheer the next runner through. New friends swapping snacks and encouragement. A quiet nod shared by two people who both understood exactly how spicy that last section had been.

It’s the camaraderie of getting through something hard together that makes trail running the beautiful sport that it is.

A massive congratulations to every runner who took on the toughest stage of the week. You did the work. You found the grit. You earned that finish-line rewards.

Special shout out to today’s stage winners:
