“I wish I had learned this years ago.”

That was a phrase I heard many times at our ISO Women’s Self-Defence Course last weekend. Hearing it tells me we’re achieving what we set out to do.

Looking at this photo of these 19 amazing women and girls, it’s hard to put into words how incredibly rewarding it was to have the privilege and responsibility of coaching them.

From 2021 until the middle of this year, I took a long break from delivering public courses and seminars. It wasn’t because I lost enthusiasm… I just had a couple of massive projects that were demanding every bit of my time. Stepping back into this work mid-year has only reaffirmed why I love it so much.

Our ISO Women’s Self-Defence framework isn’t just about physical techniques. In fact, roughly 60% of our time together is spent entirely on mindset work.

We tackle the heavy, essential topics that get to the absolute heart of women’s safety:

• What is victim blaming, and why does it exist?
• Do we truly believe we are worth defending?
• Do our daily actions and boundaries reflect that belief?
• Where does educating men fit into the battle for women’s safety?

Physical training has tremendous value, but without these raw thought exercises, we are not doing half of what needs doing. Our safety efforts are wildly incomplete until someone truly realises they deserve to be safe, respected, and fiercely protected.

Thank you so much to these 19 ladies for giving me the privilege of working with you for the day.

I’m already locking in the date for the next one. 🙏🏼

Today I turn 50, and to say I’ve been lucky is an understatement.

Life has been incredible—not without its challenges, but definitely incredible. To say I am grateful would also be a huge understatement, and the God’s honest truth is that I am amazed I’ve made it this far and that things keep getting better.

I get mega enthusiastic about the simple things in life, and here’s why...

At the age of 15, I broke my neck and sustained enough head trauma to give me retrograde amnesia. For the first couple of weeks, it was a roll of the dice as we waited to see whether I’d have permanent brain damage (I’m sure many people would assert that I do 😂).

It was a total of about 8 weeks dead flat on my back, only allowed to move my eyes while we waited to see if I’d have use of my arms and legs, and whether I’d ever be able to talk again after the op (clearly that talking bit is working too 😂). These are obviously serious things for a 15 year old to ponder.

My surgeon absolutely aced it (thank you Prof Robert Fraser 🙏🏼), and about 8 weeks after the accident, I was walking, talking, and the rebuild began. Hopefully you never break your neck, but if you do, Adelaide is one of the best places in the world for getting put back together.

So anyhow, a metal plate, some screws, and a bone graft later, and I’m up and about and thanking God every day for the privilege.

I was only 15, but laying there in that bed, I prayed a lot and I swore to God that if I was lucky enough to get a second chance, I’d try to do right with it. Ever since then, there’s only been 3 reasons I do anything...

1️⃣ It's the right thing to do
2️⃣ It makes me happy
3️⃣ I’ve got no choice. (And if we are being truly honest, the times where we truly have no choice are pretty rare).

Approaching life through that lens helps make things simpler, and it makes me much happier than if I dance to the beat of other people’s drums. I don’t always get it right, I don’t know that any of us do, but I definitely give it my best, well-considered shot.

At age 50, I truly feel like I’m only just getting started. I know that nobody is actually self-made, so thank you to all the incredible people in my life who helped me get here.

And thank you to life’s aggravations for helping motivate me... because sometimes caffeine and indignation are pretty awesome fuel 😂☕️🙏🏼

How do you make great friends as an adult?

I’ve been asked this a number of times, including just recently…it got me thinking…and I reckon I have an awswer!!!

When I look at some of the strongest friendships in my life, both through BJJ and completely outside of it, I keep seeing the same three ingredients. I talk through them here.

And with loneliness seemingly becoming such a huge issue for adults (around 30% of Aussies reportedly chronically lonely) I think finding the right environments and the right people matters enormously. ❤️ 🤝

Thank you Adelaide! 🙏🏼

Our ISOHEALTH Women’s Self-Defence Course for October 11th is completely SOLD OUT.

The remaining places were snapped up on Monday, September 21st, and we want to preserve a great training experience for everyone attending, so we need to keep our maximum participant limit solid.

We do, however, hate the thought of anyone missing out who had their eye on attending.

If you’d like to be placed on the waitlist for our next ISO Women’s Self-Defence Course, please SMS 0400 313 204 or DM us here on Instagram.

Thank you again for such a great response. I’m really looking forward to working with this awesome new group on October 11th. 🙏🏼
