Good Lunging Starts Before the Horse Moves

Lunging is not about sending a horse around in circles.

It begins with preparation, communication and understanding.

A successful lunging session is built on clear cues, correct positioning and reading the horse in front of you. Every horse learns differently, and every session should have a purpose.

Effective lunging means understanding

✔ Safe equipment and correct set up
✔ Your position and body language
✔ How to encourage balanced, relaxed movement
✔ When to progress and when to give the horse a break

Done well, lunging can improve communication, build confidence and support a horse's education. Done poorly, it can create confusion, tension and unnecessary physical strain.

That is why education matters.

At The Australian Equine Institute, our nationally recognised
ACM20221 Certificate II in Horse Care
ACM30821 Certificate III in Horse Care

teach practical groundwork and horse handling skills that help students work with horses safely and effectively.

Because good horsemanship starts from the ground up.

Case Study: Sometimes It's the Small Changes That Matter Most

When Emily enrolled in the Certificate II in Horse Care, she wasn't looking for a career in the equine industry.

She simply wanted to become a better horse owner.

Like many people, Emily had learned from friends, social media and years spent around horses. While some of that knowledge was valuable, she soon realised there were gaps in her understanding.

One lesson that stood out was the importance of routine observation. Rather than simply feeding and riding each day, she started paying closer attention to her horse's behaviour, appetite, body condition and overall wellbeing.

A few months later, she noticed subtle changes that she may have overlooked in the past. Because she recognised that something wasn't quite right, she organised a veterinary assessment early. The issue was identified before it became a much larger health problem.

For Emily, the biggest lesson wasn't learning something completely new. It was learning to observe with purpose.

Her biggest takeaway?

"I realised good horse care isn't about doing more. It's about noticing more."

At The Australian Equine Institute, we believe education helps people make better decisions for their horses every day, because sometimes the smallest changes make the biggest difference.

Nothing means more to us than creating a learning environment where every student feels safe, respected and supported. 💙

Here's what one of our students had to say:

"I always felt safe and respected while training with AEI. No question was ever too silly, and Sarah and Tori were always there to help me understand and support my learning."

Thank you for trusting us with your equine education. 🐴

Case Study: A Small Change That Could Have Been Missed

When Sophie began volunteering at a local equine facility, one of her responsibilities was helping with daily horse care and health monitoring.

During a routine morning check of a new group of horses recently brought onto the property, she noticed a horse that seemed slightly off. There was nothing dramatic. The horse was eating, moving around, and appeared generally well. However, Sophie observed a mild nasal discharge and a subtle change in behaviour.

Because she had recently completed training on horse health, biosecurity, and disease monitoring, she knew these small signs were worth reporting.

The horse was isolated and assessed by a veterinarian. While it was not a serious disease outbreak, the situation highlighted how quickly illness can spread when early warning signs are missed. It also reinforced the importance of hygiene practices, monitoring horse health, and understanding diseases that can affect both animals and people.

For Sophie, the experience was a reminder that good horse care is often about noticing the little things before they become bigger problems.

Her biggest takeaway?

"Sometimes the most important thing you can do is pay attention."

At The Australian Equine Institute, students learn practical skills in horse health, welfare, biosecurity, and disease prevention because protecting horses starts with knowledge.
