PAi & VAKA EIVA - A FULL CIRCLE

In 2006 our PAi Guy, Troy Nexus, was apart of NZ’s formidable TEAM GOODYEAR that took a Mahimahi to Vaka Eiva and won the mens Premier Round Raro Race. The following year they returned and got spanked. The first year conditions were flat and the Mahimahi shone.The next year it was huge and that was where the crew came unstuck, but a love relationship was formed with both Vaka Eiva and Ocean Racing. He’d had a taste and wanted more big ocean swells, but knew that NZ needed a better waka to safely be able to perform in those conditions, so he set about designing a new Waka which he called the PACER. Along with the PACER he designed the now renowned TORPEDO Ama and its sister, the BULLET Ama for Australia.

Fast forward two decades and Rarotonga needed to replace a bunch of the Ama on their Taimana Vaka fleet so approached us at PAi to see if the TORPEDO might suit. The first was sent over for testing and the locals took it for a spin in some flat conditions. Feedback was that they all thought it was great but wanted to wait for the next big sea to roll through so they could test it in what Raro is renowned for. Testing came back with a positive BIG TICK and the decision was made to get a bunch shipped over. We were honoured and stoked to be able to help the island keep their old fleet alive and ready to race.

The Ama soon became the favourite combination and the following year when they ordered the start of their new ARE MATAHINA Va’a fleet they asked to “hold the Ama” as they wanted to run the PAi TORPEDO on them all. This made us even prouder and so the next batch was made and sent with our MAMBA Kiato to suit the Taumanu set up. When we turned up at last years race it was a surreal experience to see 22 of the waka rigged with our gear waiting to hit the water. Very Proud moment for us both.

Another year has now passed and yet another batch of TORPEDOs are being prepared and shipped over for this years VAKA EIVA, along with more Ama and kiato for the outer islands so they can also keep their Vaka alive.

Troy along with his wife and partner in crime Justine have now established PAi - Paddling Alliance Industries as a leading brand in the paddling world, being both designers and suppliers of all your paddling needs. It is truely a huge honour and privilege for us at PAi to now be in a position that we can be support and be a Silver Sponsor for an event that we both love so much, especially since the Vaka Eiva has played such a huge role in the reason we exist.

Honestly its the best event in the world. If you have been you will know, if you haven’t, then you are truely missing out. Its the 20th Edition this year and it will be massive.

Waikato River Authority announced as naming sponsor of
Te Puku o Te Ika Sprint Champs

The Waikato River Authority (WRA) has signed a two-year agreement to become the naming and principal sponsor of the Te Puku o Te Ika Outrigger Canoe Association’s (TPoTI) Regional Sprint Championships, covering the 2026 and 2027 events.

Under the agreement, the event will be known as the Te Puku o Te Ika – Sprint Champs, Waikato River Authority, bringing together waka ama paddlers from across the region for an annual sprint championship that also serves as a national qualifying event.

The championships are held at Lake Karāpiro, with the 2026 event set for 5–6 December. The 2025 event, held on 6 - 7 December, drew some 1,200 paddlers, including from clubs across the Waikato catchment, Taranaki and Bay of Plenty.

Participating Waikato clubs, included Te Toki Waka Ama, Tūrangawaewae Waka Sports, Waikato Dragon Boat and Waka Ama Association, Raahui Pookeka Waka Sports, Ngā Kaihoe o Te Pūaha Waka Ama Club, and Ngā Tai Whakarongo Waka Ama Club.

The partnership, builds on WRA’s earlier sponsorship of the national waka ama sprints. By extending its support to the regional competition, WRA is providing greater assistance to a volunteer-run organisation that develops paddlers and future kaitiaki of the Waikato River.

The sponsorship includes branding across event signage, promotional materials and online event programmes, as well as a dedicated WRA information site at the event where staff will engage directly with paddlers, whānau and spectators to share information about river health and restoration initiatives.

“The Waikato River is the life force of this region, and Te Puku o Te Ika Sprint Champs provides a fantastic way to connect with paddlers and their whānau in a positive environment,” said Antoine Coffin, Kaihautū of the Waikato River Authority.

“Waka ama is intrinsically connected to the health of our wai. This partnership gives us a direct way to reach paddlers and their whānau, share the work being undertaken to restore the Waikato and Waipā awa, and support a sport whose global growth was clearly evident at the World Sprints in Singapore.”

Te Puku o Te Ika Outrigger Canoe Association Board Chairperson Hiria Rolleston said the sponsorship reflected the event's long-standing relationship with the Waikato awa and iwi.

“Having the Waikato River Authority as our naming sponsor is a real vote of confidence in our paddlers and our community,” said Mrs Rolleston. “Waka ama naturally reinforces respect for water, our clubs aren't just users of the river, they're active kaitiaki, and this partnership helps us strengthen that connection for our tamariki and rangatahi coming through the sport.”

For paddlers, clubs and event organisers, growing awareness of biosecurity threats such as the gold clam has reinforced the importance of protecting the Waikato River and other waterways.
The Te Puku o Te Ika – Sprint Champs, Waikato River Authority will next be held at Mighty River Domain, Lake Karāpiro, on 5–6 December 2026.
