Funny story about my job: One morning a table needed to be in the water. I walked from the office and grabbed the table , pushed it toward the edge. I picked it up, flung it out by my feet. Fell forward with motion and landed on my back, (clothes, burkes and all) Made a big splash and got everyone’s attention

Gripping skills can be taught with children of all ages - from infants to the learn to swim program.

Babies are born with a grasp reflex that we want to use in swimming for holding on to parents t-shirt, fingers or side of the pool depending on the swimmers age and ability.

Remember the higher you hold a child out of the water the harder their little muscles have to work. Start low in the water and lift higher as the skill is mastered.

Gripping is a great tool for safety skills, independence and strength.
