The role of physiotherapy in hip and knee replacement surgery ๐โโ๏ธ๐๏ธโโ๏ธ๐
For many people with osteoarthritis, pain can be managed with strengthening and lifestyle changes. But when pain and limitations persist despite doing the right things, joint replacement can become a valuable option. Surgery is primarily about pain relief - and physiotherapy plays a key role throughout the process.
Pre-operative physio (prehab) helps build strength and improve movement before surgery, which can support a smoother early recovery.
After surgery, rehab progresses through stages:๏ฟฝโข restoring movement and reducing swelling๏ฟฝโข rebuilding strength and endurance๏ฟฝโข returning to meaningful activities like walking, travel, sport, and keeping up with family

Achilles Rupture Rehabilitation
Recovering from an Achilles rupture takes patience, consistency, and the right guidance.
Overall, there are very similar long-term success rates between surgical and non-surgical management of Achilles ruptures, though factors such as age, location of the rupture and a personโs functional demands guide the decision making process.
Early immobilisation with a boot, raised heel and crutches are important early on in either case.
Followed by structured loading, progressive strengthening, and individualised rehab, patients can regain confidence and functionโstep by step.

MENISCUS REPAIR SURGERY ๐ฆต๐ผ
โจHave you recently had or are you about to have a meniscus repair surgery? Depending on the type of meniscus tear, your surgeon may partially remove it OR stitch it back together which can protect your knee joint in the long term.
What to expect in the early phase (0-6weeks post op):
- swelling
- stiffness
- mild discomfort
- Youโll most likely be on crutches and a knee brace to help protect the repair for the first 4-6 weeks.

Rotator cuff repair: what to expect early on ๐ฆพ
If youโve recently had (or are preparing for) a rotator cuff repair, hereโs what to expect from your physio journey.
โข Early milestones โ improving comfort, safe assisted or passive shoulder movement when appropriate, and gradually feeling more confident with basic tasks.
โข Sling and movement expectations โ most people will use a sling initially to protect the repair, with lifting and weight-bearing through the arm typically limited and guided by your surgeon and physiotherapist.
โข Gentle exercises that often begin early โ simple movements for the hand, wrist, elbow, posture, and very light shoulder exercises if cleared, aimed at maintaining mobility without stressing the repair.

End of year dinner with a team that shows up every day with care, skill and real intent to serve our community and each other.
