🐴 Before you buy another tub of gut supplement, consider what a gastroscope could tell you. 🐴

When your horse isn’t quite themselves, it’s understandable to try something that might help. But changing supplements or giving ulcer medication without confirming the problem can mean spending money while still wondering what’s wrong.

Signs such as girthiness, changes in appetite and poor performance don’t confirm stomach ulcers.

A gastroscopy allows our vets to examine the stomach lining, identify ulcers and their location, and recommend treatment based on what they find.

Different types of gastric disease can need different treatment approaches. πŸ”Ž

πŸ’° How do the costs compare?πŸ’°

For perspective, advertised Australian retail prices of your most popular ulcer supplements on the market range from around $100 - $300

β€’ Our monthly gastroscopy package is $250, including a FREE overnight stay.

Appropriate supplements can play a useful role in digestive support. They cannot tell us whether your horse has stomach ulcers, which treatment is needed, or whether ulcers have healed.

πŸ“… A reminder that our $250 package runs on the third Wednesday of every month, with:

βœ“ Gastroscopy performed by a veterinarian
βœ“ Behavioural assessment
βœ“ Dietary analysis with an equine nutritionist
βœ“ FREE overnight stay

🦷 A dental can also be added for $199.

We know every dollar counts. Investigating the problem can help you make more informed decisions about where that money goes.

Our fencing is now complete around the clinic to keep our client horses safe and secure!

Cannot recommend JKO Industries enough! The communication, willingness to work around our inpatients and a busy practice and the attention to detail was impeccable.

Thank you πŸ₯°

πŸ’‰ EQUINE VACCINATIONS ~ WHAT DOES YOUR HORSE ACTUALLY NEED? 🐴

Vaccination is one of the simplest ways we can protect our horses from serious and in some cases fatal infectious diseases.

But not every horse has the same risk profile. Where your horse lives, whether they travel or compete, their contact with other horses, and whether they are breeding all play a role in deciding which vaccinations are appropriate.

Here are four important diseases horse owners should know about:

πŸ¦‡ HENDRA VIRUS

For horses in Queensland and northern NSW, Hendra remains an important consideration.

The virus can be transmitted from flying foxes to horses and can also spread from infected horses to people. There is no specific treatment for Hendra virus infection.

An important consideration with an unvaccinated horse that becomes unwell is that veterinary examination, procedures and treatment options may be restricted while Hendra virus is being excluded. This can potentially delay more intensive treatment or referral in a critically ill horse.

The vaccination course consists of:
πŸ’‰ 2 initial vaccinations, 21–42 days apart
πŸ’‰ A booster 6 months after the second vaccination
πŸ’‰ Ongoing yearly boosters according to the current registered vaccine schedule

🩹 TETANUS

Tetanus bacteria can enter through wounds and sometimes the original wound is so small it is easily missed.

The bacteria produce a powerful toxin affecting the nervous system, resulting in severe muscle rigidity, spasms and potentially death.

The good news? Tetanus is highly preventable through vaccination.

We strongly recommend tetanus vaccination for every horse, regardless of whether they travel or remain at home.

🀧 STRANGLES

Strangles is a highly contagious bacterial disease that can move quickly through groups of horses.

It can spread through direct contact with infected horses and contaminated nasal discharge or material from affected lymph nodes, as well as indirectly through contaminated equipment, water sources and people.

Vaccination is particularly worth considering for horses that:
πŸ† Compete or attend shows
🐴 Live on agistment
🚚 Travel regularly
🧬 Visit studs or breeding facilities
🀝 Frequently mix with unfamiliar horses

Tetanus and strangles vaccination can also be administered using a combined 2-in-1 vaccine where appropriate.

🐎 EQUINE HERPES VIRUS EHV-1 & EHV-4

EHV-1 and EHV-4 are commonly associated with respiratory disease, but EHV-1 can also be associated with abortion and neurological disease.

Vaccination protocols depend heavily on the individual horse and their level of risk.

It may be recommended for:
🀰 Pregnant broodmares
🐎 Competition horses
🚚 Horses travelling regularly
🏑 Horses entering studs, agistment or other multi-horse facilities

πŸ’› The right vaccination program should be based on your horse not simply a standard calendar.

At Gold Coast Equine Clinic, our vets can review your horse’s age, lifestyle, travel, competition and breeding status and help establish an appropriate vaccination schedule.

Not sure when your horse was last vaccinated? We can also review their history and work out what they need next.

πŸ΄πŸ’› HAPPY VET NURSE DAY πŸ’›πŸ΄

Today we’re celebrating the people who are quite simply the backbone of our clinic , our incredible veterinary nurses.

There is so much that happens behind the scenes of an equine veterinary clinic that our clients don’t always get to see.

Our nurses are there preparing horses for procedures, assisting our vets, monitoring patients, running equipment, caring for hospital cases, keeping the clinic moving and making sure every horse receives the standard of care we expect at Gold Coast Equine Clinic. ✨ πŸ₯‡

They’re also the ones cleaning up after everyone, finding the missing piece of equipment, juggling ten things at once and somehow already knowing what the vet needs before they ask for it. πŸ˜…

It takes a special combination of skill, knowledge, patience and compassion to be a great equine vet nurse! πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ ❀️

To our nursing team, Ella and Morgan ~ thank you for the early starts, the late finishes, the messy jobs, the difficult cases and everything you do in between. πŸ™Œ

Our vets couldn’t do what they do without you, and our clinic simply wouldn’t be the same without you. πŸ’›

Today is about recognising everything you bring to GCEC and, most importantly, to the horses in our care.

Happy Vet Nurse Day from all of us at Gold Coast Equine Clinic. πŸ΄πŸ©ΊπŸ’›

🦷 DRIVE THROUGH DENTALS AT THE CLINIC | $220 INCLUDING SEDATION 🦷

Professional dental care for your horse, with an easier visit for you.

πŸ“… No need to wait for a dedicated dental day. πŸ“…
We offer flexible appointment times to suit you and your horse!

Our purpose-built Advancetown clinic makes your visit straightforward, with:

βœ”οΈ Ample float parking and room to manoeuvre
βœ”οΈ Safe access and unloading area
βœ”οΈ A dedicated crush to support safe handling
βœ”οΈ Day yards available for your horse

🐴 WHY CHOOSE A VETERINARIAN? 🐴

Good dental care goes beyond filing sharp edges. A veterinarian can assess your horse’s oral health, identify dental disease and advise on treatment. Sedation supports a thorough examination and helps keep your horse comfortable and manageable during the procedure.

Regular dental checks support comfortable chewing and help identify problems early ~ whether your horse is a paddock companion or a performance partner.

πŸ’› Veterinary dental care for $220, including sedation, with appointments that fit your schedule. πŸ’›

πŸ“… **Third Wednesday of every month**
🩺 **$250 gastroscopy package**
🏑 **FREE overnight stay**

**Remaining 2026 dates:**
πŸ”Ή Wednesday 21 October
πŸ”Ή Wednesday 18 November
πŸ”Ή Wednesday 16 December

Your appointment includes:

πŸ”Ή Gastroscopy performed by a veterinarian, using our own gastroscope.
πŸ”Ή A detailed behavioural assessment, to discuss changes you’ve noticed and consider your horse’s broader needs.
πŸ”Ή Dietary analysis with an equine nutritionist, to review feeding as part of your horse’s care.
πŸ”Ή A weight check on our clinic scales, providing a useful baseline for ongoing monitoring.
πŸ”Ή A free overnight stay at our Advancetown clinic.
