Cook Islands 60m Record 🇨🇰�

Vern Toaolamai-Holden runs 6.92 to be the first Cook Islander to run sub 7 over 60m breaking the Cook Islands Mens 60m Record. The 15 year old taking the win at the Athletics Canterbury Senior Interclub meet in Christchurch, NZ one week after breaking the 100m record.

Vern breaks the Cook Islands Men’s National Record previously held by Daniel Tolosa at 7.09

🇨🇰 33 YEARS OF HISTORY BROKEN BY A 15-YEAR-OLD!

Cook Islands sprinting history has been rewritten!

At just 15 years old, Vern Toaolamai-Holden has smashed the Cook Islands men's 100m national record, clocking an incredible 10.74 seconds at a Canterbury club meet in Christchurch.

Vern took 0.23 seconds off the previous record of 10.97s, set by Mark Sherwin in 1993. A record that had stood for nearly 33 years!

And he hasn't stopped there!

This weekend Vern backed up his record-breaking performance with another outstanding set of results:

60m (outdoor): 6.92s (new Cook Islands outdoor record)
100m: 10.86s
200m: 22.45s

Already an Oceania U16 sprint champion and national relay record holder, Vern continues to show what an exciting future lies ahead for Cook Islands athletics.

A huge congratulations to Vern, his coach and family for the hard work and dedication behind these achievements.

15 years old. 10.74 seconds. 33 years of history rewritten!

Cook Islands 100m Record 🇨🇰

At just 15 years of age Vern Toaolamai-Holden runs 10.74 in Christchurch, New Zealand to break the Cook Islands Senior Men’s National Record.

Vern breaks the 33 year old Cook Islands Men’s National Record previously held by Mark Sherwin at 10.94.

Athletics New Zealand is deeply saddened by the passing of legendary coach Arch Jelley, who died this morning aged 104.

Born in Dunedin in 1922, Arch guided dozens of New Zealand’s finest middle-distance runners over more than five decades. He is best known for his partnership with Sir John Walker, coaching him to a world mile record of 3:49.4 in 1975, the first sub-3:50 mile in history, and to 1976 Olympic 1500m gold.

A teacher and school principal by profession, Arch kept training positive and always said a bad race was the coach’s fault, never the athlete’s. He was still at the track, stopwatch in hand, at 93 when he guided Hamish Carson to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

Arch was awarded an OBE for services to sport, and made a Life Member of Athletics New Zealand in 2024.
