🎉 Celebrating 25 years of Bay & Basin Leisure Centre!

This morning, we celebrated a very special milestone with our members, staff and community: 25 years of Bay & Basin Leisure Centre.

Since opening in 2001, the centre has been part of countless local memories, from first swimming lessons and school carnivals to family visits, fitness goals, friendships and time spent in the water.

And what a year 2001 was ‼️

The first iPod was released, Wikipedia launched, Microsoft released the original Xbox, the first Harry Potter film opened in cinemas, Ian Thorpe made history at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka by becoming the first person to win six gold medals at a single world championship, and the Newcastle Knights defeated the heavily favoured Parramatta Eels in the NRL Grand Final.

Over the past 25 years, Bay & Basin Leisure Centre has:

🏊 Welcomed 5.7 million visits since opening
📍 Recorded 317,054 visits in 2025 alone
🎓 Helped approximately 28,000 children learn to swim
🌱 Supported generations of local families, including some of our own team members who began in the swim school at just two years old and have since progressed into key roles at the centre

This morning’s birthday morning tea was a wonderful opportunity to enjoy some cake, share stories and celebrate the people and memories that have shaped Bay & Basin Leisure Centre over the past quarter-century.

Our crews have been working hard to prepare the pool for the season ahead, and it won’t be long before swimmers are back in the water!

The ultimate rainy-day rescue for family fun! The indoor pool at Bay & Basin Leisure Centre, water slide and splash activities are perfect for the kids. The pool is also accessible with a hoist available to those with mobility issues.

We want to reassure residents that the proposed spectator fee at our aquatic and leisure facilities will be removed from the fees and charges to be considered for adoption in the Delivery Program and Operational Plan 2026-27 on Monday 29 June.

Council remains committed to balancing the long-term sustainability of our facilities with keeping them welcoming, accessible and family-friendly.

We appreciate your feedback and will continue to listen as we plan for the future of our community facilities.
