What is trauma informed weight lifting? 🤍
Trauma-informed weight training recognises that our bodies carry lived experiences, not just strength, and that how we train should be grounded in care, choice, and safety. It’s not about lifting lighter, it’s about lifting in a way that feels safer for both the body and the nervous system.
This is especially important for people who have experienced family violence, sexual assault, or birth trauma. Trauma can show up in the body as hypervigilance, disconnection, tension, or strong reactions to certain movements, environments, or touch. Because of this, training is not just physical, it is deeply connected to safety, control, and trust.
A trauma-informed approach prioritises choice, predictability and respect. It can look like offering options, avoiding hands-on corrections without consent, explaining movements clearly, allowing rest, and adjusting when something doesn’t feel right. It centres how the body feels, not just what it can do.
For many, this is how strength is rebuilt, not through force, but through feeling safe in their body again. 🤍

Teaching my kids that the gym is a space of growth, not a place to fear. It’s where they learn to push limits, build strength, and discover confidence. When they see it as a natural part of life, they’ll feel at home in their own journey and learn ways that they love moving their body 🫶🏻

Thought it was time to reintroduce myself as we have a lot of new people on here recently ✨
Hi, I’m Shantelle, the face behind VDL Strength! I’m a qualified Personal Trainer with a passion for powerlifting and strength training. With over 6 years of experience in the gym and fitness world, I specialize in helping women—especially those with kids—achieve their fitness goals and rediscover their strength.
As a busy mom of two, I understand the challenges of balancing fitness with family and work life. That’s why I’m here to guide and support you on your journey, whether you’re lifting for the first time or looking to take your strength to the next level. My approach is all about inclusivity and empowerment, making sure that everyone, no matter their background or experience, feels welcome and capable of achieving their goals.
No matter your gender identity, cultural background, or whether you live with a disability, VDL Strength is a safe and inclusive space for you. I believe that fitness should be accessible to everyone, and I’m here to help you feel strong, confident, and supported every step of the way.
In addition to my passion for fitness, I work full-time as a prevention practitioner, advocating for safer, more supportive communities. As a feminist, I’m committed to creating a space where women and all individuals can thrive, feel strong, and unapologetically prioritise their health.
