Notice to all dealers this week. The implementation of Legislation changes has required extensive system and process changes across the Fi****ms Registry. Application processing timeframes have been impacted. These impacts have also affected licence renewal applications.

Where a licence holder submits a renewal application before the expiry date of their licence, they retain continued authority under the licence until the renewal application has been assessed and finalised, even if the licence card has expired.

This continued authority can be verified through the Internet Register of Licences and Permits to Acquire.

NSW Police’s current P650 guidance still allows an unlicensed person to use a fi***rm on an approved range if they complete the P650 declaration, are directly supervised by an appropriately licensed person.

NSW Police explicitly say, “The exemption for unlicensed persons shooting on approved ranges … (P650 process) will be removed.” But this is a future change.

So the position right now is:
* P650: still valid and operational
* Unlicensed adult: can still try shooting at an approved range under a P650
* Direct supervision: 1 unlicensed shooter : 1 licensed supervisor at the firing line

Got back a PTA that is denied due to the max cap.

Following consideration of your application for a Permit to Acquire A### we advise the following.

Under clause 38 of Schedule 3 of the Fi****ms Act 1996, your application for a permit to acquire is taken never to have been made and is of no effect. This is because granting your application would mean the number of fi****ms that you possess and use would exceed the maximum number of fi****ms you will be permitted to possess and use under section 8A, as inserted by the Terrorism and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2025, after the commencement of that section.

2 November, NSW gun buy back, with costs evenly split between the state and the commonwealth.

Under the first phase of the scheme, $1,000 will be paid for revolvers and $850 for semi-automatic handguns. $850 will be paid for double-barrel sh****ns and $650 for single barrel. Between $650 and $1,000 will be paid for r***es, while air r***es have a fixed compensation of $450.

The governments said phase 2 of the scheme would begin in early 2027, and provide “a pathway to compensation” for “eligible higher-value fi****ms with an indicative market value above $3,000, capped at $10,000 per fi***rm”.
