Forbes wins the Ken Hunter Shield!

The 2026 tennis series wrapped up at Forbes with a terrific final round that showcased everything that makes this competition special — quality tennis, great competition, friendship and plenty of good banter along the way.

Across three rounds, players from West Wyalong, Forbes, Cowra, Grenfell, Cootamundra and South Wagga took to the courts, with competitors across all levels battling it out for games, sets and points.

While the stats try to tell the story of wins, losses, games and sets; the real success of the competition is not measured in numbers. Intertown Tennis provides a unique opportunity for players to engage with their tennis, challenge themselves against different opponents, develop their skills adjusting to new partners - meeting new people, and catching up with old friends. The competition is respected on court, but always with a great sense of fun, encouragement and camaraderie. A genuine celebration of everything good about tennis.

Forbes Ran hot in the final round

Forbes came home with a wet sail – spinnaker full to the brim, and averaged a massive 3.75 sets per player, 30.9 games and 430 points, finishing ahead of Cowra on 3.2 sets, Grenfell on 3.0 sets, West Wyalong, Cootamundra and Sth Wagga rounding up the tail.

Team Average Sets Average Games Average Pts Players
Forbes 3.75 30.9 430.00 16
Grenfell 3.00 28.2 424.36 7
Cowra 3.20 28.0 418.60 5
Cootamundra 2.43 28.3 416.29 7
West Wyalong 2.80 28.6 409.04 25
South Wagga 1.67 20.7 360.67 3

The narrow spread between the top teams underlined just how competitive the final round was. Forbes' strong showing was particularly impressive, with its players producing the highest averages for both sets, games and points.

This charge on the final saw saw Forbes record the highest average number of sets per player, at an impressive 3.18, and therefore took the overall honours under the competition's scoring system.

Cowra was next on 3.09, followed by South Wagga at 2.94, West Wyalong at 2.92, Grenfell at 2.84 and defending champions, Cootamundra at 2.71.

West Wyalong's contribution was very significant, recording 187 total sets across 64 player appearances — the largest volume of sets and player participation of any team in the competition. That figure highlights the depth and commitment of the West Wyalong squad, and how the weight of numbers doesn’t skew results without actual performance. The West Wyalong Club would like to sincerely thank Blue and Maree Hetherington for their very generous transportation offering, and Tanya Mossop for being the very capable and patient pilot.

Individual performances for the final round showed

Ladies' Division 1:

Forbes dynamo, Christine Cogswell was the leading points scorer with 458 points, 4 sets and 34 games, while Lara Stibbard finished on 430, 4 sets and 33 games, with Bev Finn 3rd on 404 pts, 4 sets and 30 games.

Trayc Cu***ng was another standout player, recording 28 games, three sets and 399 points.

Ladies' Division 2:

Division 2 Ladies was particularly close at the top, with Amanda Willoughby recording 462 pts, 4 sets and 35 games followed closely by Pat Cu***ng on 457 points, 4 sets and 34 games. Cassie Griffin was next on 447, 3 sets and 30 games, followed by Sally Mitton on 440 and Beatriz Bravado on 437.

Ladies' Division 3

Penelope O'Connell led Division 3 Ladies with an impressive 463 points, 35 games and five sets. Marianne Hardy followed on 444 points, with Lyndy Cannon on 431. Lots of Forbes players here!

Men's Division 1

The highest individual points tally across all six divisions belonged to Andrew Bartlett, who finished Division 1 with 478 points, 38 games and all six sets. Peter Wood recorded 452 points, 4 sets, and 33 games and David Scotney 439, 3 and 32. David Haworth produced 426 points and five sets and 34 games, while Grenfell chief Mick Mitton earned 413, 3 sets and 28 games.

Men's Division 2

Ross Graham led Division 2 Men with 466 points, 4 sets and 35 games, just ahead of Graham Watt on 459, 5 and 37. Bailey Boneham was also impressive on 453 pts. Watt and Boneham both won 37 games and five sets, demonstrating the quality and competitiveness at the top of the division. Rod Stewart 443, Wade Chapman 440, Simon Barton 438, Jude Anderson 433, Mark Ritchie 429 and Charlie Mitton 426 were all well above the water-mark middle – held firmly by Stuart Luelf on 408 with 4 sets won.

Men's Division 3

Bradman Hardy led Division 3 Men with 461 points, 5 sets, 34 games, while Zac Butter was only three points behind on 458, 5 and 35. Robert Hopkins completed a strong Forbes showing with 441 points and 5 sets, while Cootamundra's Brett Green recorded 431 from just 2 sets won – but 31 games!

The 2026 Individual Season Awards

The season also produced another opportunity to recognise the players who performed consistently across the rounds.
The individual awards were determined by average games, rewarding players who were able to consistently accumulate games across their appearances.

🏆 Men's Division 1 — David Haworth – with a special mention to Mark Ritchie - only separated by set count, and this saw Dave Haworth awarded the top dog of Men's Division 1 for 2026. He and Mark Ritchie both finishing on an outstanding 33.0 average games. Andrew Bartlett was just behind on 32.9 average games, making the Division 1 Men's award one of the closest of the season.

🏆 Men's Division 2 — Graham Watt
Graham Watt took the Men's Division 2 season award with an impressive 32.5 average games. Watt also averaged 4 sets and 433 points across his two appearances.

He was closely challenged by Bailey Boneham, Jude Anderson and Will Buik, all of whom averaged 32.0 games.

It was another excellent example of how close the competition was across the season.

🏆 Ladies' Division 1 — Pat Cu***ng

The Ladies' Division 1 season award went to Pat Cu***ng, who finished with a superb 32.0 average games. Pat also averaged 3.5 sets and 441.5 points, putting together a strong season.

Sally Russell was next on 31.5 average games, with Christine Cogswell and Trayc Cu***ng both averaging 30.7. Maybe Trayc will try to find out the secret from her mother, Pat during the off season!

🏆 Ladies' Division 2 — Amanda Willoughby
Amanda Willoughby of Cootamundra was the clear winner of the Ladies' Division 2 season award, producing an outstanding 34.5 average games. Amanda also averaged 4.5 sets and 451.5 points, making her one of the strongest all-round performers across the season.

Her 34.5 average games stood clearly above the rest of the division, with Sally Mitton next on 30.3.

It’s nice to recognise the stand out performances, but anyone who was around the courts during the series knows that the numbers don't show the best part of the competition.

Every player matters. In all, we had 89 different players make at least one appearance in this event during year. We averaged 62 players per round – all playing 6 sets each.

Congratulations to every player who took part in the 2026 series. The tennis was impressive, the performances memorable, and the spirit of the competition even better. Forbes now must defend the shield – and with a touch of handicapping weight - to ensure a level playing field continues long into the future.

Intertown Tennis, Round 2, Cowra:

Sunshine peeking from behind clouds, good rallies, and even better company — Intertown Tennis Round 2 at Cowra had everything you could want from community tennis. The courts were humming with 53 players from the first serve to last, with excellent baseline exchanges, cheeky drop shots, lobs and plenty of laughs between points. New faces mixed in with familiar rivals, some pairings flourished, and a few nail biters went the distance, before ending in handshakes and smiles.

Cowra’s crew turned up in numbers and energy, South Wagga showed their trademark consistency, and West Wyalong kept the pace high with court side encouragement all afternoon.
Cootamundra, Grenfell, and Forbes added grit and sportsmanship to every round, and it felt like every court had its own little storyline — momentum swings, clutch volleys, the odd shank into the net, and a few “how did that go in?” winners!

Only one player cracked the rarified air carrying the undefeated tag – Tim Headon from South Wagga! That’s back to back for Tim and definitely a new series of challenges awaiting his next appearance!

Suzie Hill, Mary Ezmaeilzadeh, Cindy Fuhlbohm and Amanda Willoughby claimed 5 sets each in the ladies, while Jonty Bullock, Mostafa Bavafa and Michael Taylor achieved this mark in the Mens.

Only 2 players in Div 1 mens were able to claim 4 sets – Jay Taylor and Paul Dever. Very impressive form by both men – earning themselves another handicap point each!

The Ken Hunter Shield picture

The Shield goes to the club with the strongest overall cumulative totals – sets per player — and 2026 is shaping up as a genuine race. South Wagga currently leads the averages, but Cowra’s larger squad and widespread top five finishes put them firmly in contention as the totals roll up. Remember: Cootamundra are the holding team from 2025, and their top performers have them hanging around the conversation again and West Wyalong has solidarity with 3 set mark on good volume. Grenfell and Forbes are not without hope as well with modest volume and decent averages – all could be swept forward by a strong final round.

In short:
• Efficiency edge, but short of numbers, South Wagga
• Participation edge: West Wyalong
• Cumulative total upside: Cowra — powered by a solid 26 player engine and leaders like Jonty Bullock Cindy Fuhlbohm, Mary Ezmaeilzadeh and Mostafa Bavafa

What to watch next

• Can Cowra’s depth convert into the biggest total to claim the Ken Hunter Shield?
• Will South Wagga’s elite per match numbers hold off the bigger squads? Will they qualify for minimum 18 player participation.
• Do Cootamundra’s defending champion vibes produce a late surge?

Either way, the scoreboard — and the Shield — will reward squads that show up in numbers and keep banking the points.

Most of all, it was the spirit that stood out: very fair calls, good banter, and people cheering for great shots on both sides of the net. Thanks to Cowra for hosting a lovely day of tennis with the next and final round scheduled for Forbes on August the 30th. All players will be welcome – come and make a great day of tennis even better! Here’s to sore legs, the odd hard luck story and another great day of tennis shared by all.

Intertown Tennis starts with a bang!

A record no. of 77 players turned out to fill 74 draw positions arriving from Wagga, Cootamundra, Cowra, Temora, Forbes, Grenfell mixed in with our 33 locals.

Therese MacFarlane glued the catering together with Judy Jones and Marilyn McClintock and also Di McCollough and Megan Cremer, while Sally Russell conjured up 92 scones to fuel the players before play started. President Andrew Job cooked the BBQ to perfection, and everyone helped make the day work – which was tough given our courts were full - with players waiting on the verandah between matches.

Eventually we finished all the sets and everyone had definitely played enough tennis to warrant their day out!

The results saw Wagga take the day out on 3.7 sets per player, with West Wyalong 2nd on 3.06. Grenfell were third on a neat and tidy 3.00, followed by Cowra 2.80, Cootamundra on 2.67 and Forbes 2.62.

We’ll “standardise” the Wagga score back to 3.06 (max score on the day) as this was their first appearance as an “unknown squad” and they were very successful unknowns at the level we guessed them at – now they are well known and even more welcome as they proved to be a great addition to the day!

The games won per player tally showed Wagga again on top with 31.17 games per player, West Wyalong 2nd with 28.52, Grenfell 3rd with 28.50, Coota 4th on 27.67, followed by Forbes on 27.53 and Cowra 26.80.

So the difference between last and 2nd (discounting Wagga) was only 1.72 games per player (over 6 sets of tennis). Very close tennis indeed – which is just the idea.

Reporting the top handful of players (inc. near ties) shows excellent performances from the following players. The points are handicap match points earned for no. of games won.

Special kudos to 3 players (of 77) that won all their 6 sets – Caleb Boneham (also won the raffle – so a big day for him), Tim Headon and Will Buik. Special mention for Lou Daniher as well – won all 4 of her scheduled sets (standardised to 6 of 6).

The number next to the player is their handicap ranking – higher is stronger…

For our locals, Sally Russell is still the standard to beat in the ladies – and in the scone making! Ben Cattle was amazing – elevated to the absolute top end and performing in a “dominating way”, Caleb Boneham won all 6 sets which underlines his improvement in the game of late, and Lou Daniher quietly nailed her 4 sets, showing where Liz Daniher (might have) got her talent from – 5 sets after being crook all day Saturday. Far above average Liz!

Fiona Boneham performed strongly, along with Madeleine Weseirski, Sally Mitton (born a local), Trayc Cu***ng was rock solid as well – although the net tape cost her certain victory! Jude Anderson had a big day as well with 4 sets and 32 games from his newly elevated handicap. Jay Taylor was great for 3 sets (of 3 played), while Stewart Palmer "also ran" as the other half of Jay...

Rohan Loudon debuted in the format with usual aplomb – 34 games won, but just the 3 sets – so some close losses; including a memorable one for Simon Cox (Bathurst/Coota) who “hijacked the draw” (thinking he was Simon Barton) and the match, winning with Julian Drumore against Rohsy and Charlie Mitton – probably costing Charlie the top spot in Div 2 as well! Well done Coxxy – not bad for a div 3 player jumping a full grade!

The next round is in Forbes on the 14th of June – all players should try to get involved to see if we can improve these numbers. A great day of competitive and very friendly tennis – a celebration of the game basically – with a BBQ lunch and light refreshments. We had an 83 yr old in the same draw as an 11 yr old on the weekend, and Jock Weir used his experience to grind out 3 winning sets citing the magic number of “60” (being the no. of years between him and his opponent). How could it be better?

What a fantastic weekend! Our Annual Teams event ran beautifully, with 22 teams taking to the court and creating a wonderful atmosphere full of happy players and great tennis. The conditions were close to perfect, and there were plenty of winners struck across the 288 sets completed!

We were delighted to welcome four teams from Canberra, along with several additional Canberran players joining other teams, and a new team from Cootamundra. Goulburn brought along a strong contingent of three teams, which was fantastic to see—not only for the great competition, but also for their wonderful contribution to the local economy!

These teams were joined by our very appreciated regular visitors from Orange, Toorooweenah, Dubbo, Narromine, Temora, and Springwood, as well as six local teams, rounding out a vibrant and competitive field. We also appreciated the involvement of keen (and very key) individuals from Campbelltown, Collaroy, Gosford, Sydney, Bathurst, Forbes, and Parkes.

Daytime catering was once again superbly managed by Therese MacFarlane and her wonderful team, especially Judy Jones, who was there across both days. We also extend our appreciation to Gail Collins, Di McCollough, Belinda Haworth and Pat Wood for their much-appreciated support—and, of course, to all the locals who pitched in when needed. Liz Daniher did an outstanding job selling raffle and 100 Club tickets – and switching up the music playlists 🤣while Chris Haworth very generously donated the prizes.

Saturday night was again a highlight, with Sally Russell and Malcolm Carnegie providing a fantastic meal. This warm hospitality has become a much-loved feature of the event. Players enjoyed the relaxed dinner on the clubhouse verandah — a great opportunity to socialise without the pressure of hitting any balls back, although the ball machine and wooden racquet challenge still kept things lively! Thanks to Chris Haworth for organising this fun addition, with Dave his 2 IC, assisting in collecting all the stray balls. The Goulburn crew embraced the challenge with great enthusiasm—and we believe they successfully negotiated the right prize as well!?

A huge effort also came from Club President Andrew Job, who ran the Division 2 men’s matches together with Stuart Luelf, and cooked the BBQ and Sunday morning’s egg and bacon rolls, and still managed to play all day Sunday. The eggs were generously donated Pace Farm Eggs, with our sincere thanks to Pace Farm for their support.

Bart handled entries, formats, score sheets, and the draw, while Peter Wood and Stuart Luelf prepared the courts to what could only be described as “Wimbledon standard”— or, at least as Woodsy would say, as close to that standard as the tennis that’s being played on them😂. They were pristine.

Ian Rattey and Harrison MacFarlane kept the kiosk running smoothly, and Tracy Grimshaw did a fantastic job coordinating the ladies’ matches while helping wherever was needed—and even finding time to play a few sets herself. Great job Tracy – much appreciated, the tennis earrings were also a standout!

Steve Pressler was also on hand, overseeing all areas and covering to ensure matches were filled. A standout moment was his suggestion to convert Phil Catlin’s additional ball fees into 100 Club tickets—resulting in Phil drawing first prize! Steve also kindly loaned his freshly restrung racquet to Laura Wood, who loved it so much he’ll have trouble getting it back!

We also thank Bland Shire Council for their support with extra bins and a marquee, and Mark Wood for assisting with the tidy-up of the old clubhouse area. To all our volunteers - your efforts are truly appreciated and vital to the success of this event.

Onto the tennis side - we once again used last year’s scoring system, designed to reward competitive matches while still reflecting performance. Four points were awarded for a set win, with bonus points given for “close” losses. Matches were decided firstly by sets won, then on total games, with an additional two points awarded to the higher game total – if sets were equal. This system produced some fascinating results and kept the competition wide open until the very end.

The Ladies draw was a perfect example, with three teams still in contention for first place going into the final round. The Dubbo Dynamites had the bye and could only watch from the clubhouse as Goulburn faced the Stringers (a combined Canberra and Campbelltown team). The Stringers, previously undefeated, had been beaten by Dubbo in the previous round and needed a strong win—three sets and at least 4 games in the 4th set —to claim the title. Goulburn, having earlier edged out Dubbo in a close match, also needed a big result to take top spot – 15 pts would do them nicely.

What followed was a titanic battle. Goulburn needed 15 points; the Stringers needed 16. In the end, the Stringers managed 15 points—just enough to draw level overall with Dubbo. Goulburn won two sets, but as the Stringers pushed them all the way, taking one set to a tiebreak and another to a 7–5 result, they collected high bonus points. The final match score saw Goulburn go down, 2–2 on sets, with games at 18–23. Just a few more points—and the title could have been theirs.

In a wonderful show of sportsmanship and grace, the Stringers offered to share first place with Dubbo after both teams finished on 95 points. However, maybe they knew the deciding factor was against them, and had to be their head-to-head result, which meant Dubbo claimed the title by this count-back method. Ebony Schlenert and Amelia Day were there to accept the prize money, and no doubt will celebrate with teammates Janelle Goodsell, Laura Sieb, and Poppy. The Stringers are now extra motivated for next year – congratulations to Bev Roberts, Bev Finn, Rozie Davies and Vicki Vesse on their strong performance.

Next best were the Cattle Kids on 53 pts followed by Lyndy’s Cannon’s on 45. Tracy Grimshaws Golden Racquets threatened 5th but did avoid the wooden spoon on 38 pts, while the Bluebells from Canberra claimed the wine bottle for the encouragement award on 20 pts! Captain Rosa Cotta with Karen Renfey won their first set in the final round which was a great way to cap things off for Bluebells – a fitting reward for persistence and dedication to the game!

The Men’s Division 2 competition featured a strong field of nine teams, each pair playing 16 sets across the weekend. With 18 points available per round (144 in total), the competition was incredibly tight, with an unbelievable six teams finishing between 91 and 113 points.

Goulburn had a particularly eventful tournament—and were unlucky to come up against a full-strength West Wyalong Rusty Nails in Round 4, where they suffered a tough 18–1 loss. It was their only heavy defeat, with just one other loss (14–7 to the Good Old Boys). Despite this shellacking, they still secured third place on 103 points—ironically finishing one point ahead of the Rusty Nails on 102, probably some chilly comfort.

Despite a strong 18–6 win over Temora in Round 9, Goulburn finished just two points shy of second place, which Temora claimed with 105 points. Temora’s only losses came against the Rusty Nails and Goulburn, but a key 15–9 win over the Good Old Boys proved decisive for them.

The Good Old Boys, however, were the standout performers, losing just once (to Temora) and finishing on top with 113 points. Greg Hunt, Rod Stewart, Gary Renfrey, Don Masters (the team’s “spiritual leader,” yet playing for Orange this weekend), John Chapman, and Tony Ross were outstanding throughout and worthy champions. Temora were deserving runners-up, led by Julian Drumore, Dave Armitage, Brett Murchie, and Brett Green, with support from Ross Findlay on Saturday and Ken on Sunday.

It was also fantastic to see our juniors stepping up to compete against seasoned players—sometimes there was an age gap of over 70 years between opponents, which is truly remarkable! The West Wyalong Bear Cubs performed admirably, earning points in every round and finishing with 42 overall. While they collected the wooden spoon, Caleb Boneham and Heath Bischoff can proudly claim a standout victory over a full-strength Rusty Nails pairing on Saturday. Caleb and Jude Anderson also claimed the prized scalp of super vets, Greg Hunt and John Chapman (Good Old Boys) in Rd 7; 6-4. This is a well earned win from gentlemen that know the game so well.

The Woods “Bootlasts” family crew recovered well from a slow start (including injury in game 1 of match 1) to finish sixth on 91 points, while Cootamundra made a strong debut and claimed fifth on 98. Orange Deuces finished seventh on 76 points, with the T’s in eighth on 68.

In Men’s Division 1, Springwood came out firing on Saturday, sprinting to an early lead with 48 points—four ahead of the West Wyalong Warriors on 44, and well clear of Dubbo (35), Goulburn (31), and Toorooweenah (29). The Paramount Pluggers were playing solid tennis but struggled to convert key moments, finishing the day on 16 points.

The big battle was Sunday morning with Springwood facing the locals, and they dominated the opening set 8-2 with Nathan Gardiner and Scott Homsey absolutely on fire against Andrew Bartlett and Dave Haworth. There seemed to be no answers to the Springwood onslaught… or was there? Arrive, Chris Haworth and Rhys Bischoff – and, in a mood for tasty “bakery items”. They promptly restored some order with their special presentation of a lovely bagel to Stewart Palmer and (our relunctantly traded player) Jay Taylor. This set a tone for the top line clash v. Nate and Scott where the home team not only “could do no wrong”, but also did a helluva alot great, to leave Captain Nate cheering when Springwood’s solitary game hit the scoreboard! The bagel, followed by the breadstick. Both teams played great tennis at times – but momentum is a big factor, and when spiralling against, is a nasty weight to carry. Springwood went down in the final set as well to surrender the match (14-4), the tournament lead, (now 6 pts down) - and with it, well.... basically all hope was gone! Dubbo Paramount were their next assignment (where they found another loss; 18-6) to limp out of the tournament with little fanfare. Great to see you again though boys, Blandicoots forever – 2027 might be Springwoods year?

Dubbo’s final round 18-6 win over Springwood put them 11 pts clear for 2nd place on 69 pts, while the West Wyalong Warriors of Chris Haworth, Rhys Bischoff, Dave Haworth, Andrew Boneham and Andrew Bartlett) accounted for the Paramount Pluggers in the final round to win the event on 76 pts! Very strong effort by the Warriors – led by Chris and Rhys.

Dubbo gained 1 more point over all opponents than West Wyalong did – so it was just their head to head match with the Warrior's that cruelled their chances (yes that's enough said Ben Strachan… for a while 😊).

Goulburn pipped Toorooweenah for 4th place, 48 pts to 43. The Paramount Pluggers rounded it all out on 30 pts.

There was a special match in round 4 that found Oscar Tweedale and Ben Hayes from the Pluggers play another Oscar and Ben (being Oscar Mason and Ben playing for Goulburn), and, it went full distance as well - a tie-breaker 8-7 – won by… Oscar and Ben (Goulburn). Goulburn took this match, 2-2 on sets, 29-25 games, for 14-11 pts to help secure 4th place over Toorooweenah, also beating them in the final round 12-10 to round out plenty of high quality, close tennis.

Thanks to Oscar Mason and Jay Taylor for their flexibility to allow “horse trading” to fill the courts where needed. Also, in this regard, Phil Catlin, Dylan Payne (winning a debut set too), Jobie, Ros Ode, Ross Findlay, Janelle Goodsell, Rod Clarkin and Scott Homsey.

All matches were played in fantastic spirit, with players appreciating great shots of every kind—and even a few that defied description! A brilliant weekend of tennis, camaraderie, and community spirit. A huge thank you to everyone who played, and those who travelled long distances absorbing high fuel costs, those who helped, and those who supported the event with their attendance. We’re already looking forward to doing it all again next year - aiming for 10-11th April, 2027 (after a well-earned 12-month recovery)!
