Willunga Tennis Club is the oldest Tennis Club in South Australia serving up passion and culture. It was established before 1894, which makes the club older than 136 years old to date. Photos found at the historic Willunga Museum date back to 1894. According to the Onkaparinga Council photo collection it seems likely that the club existed before that time.
The town of Willunga was established in 1839. The old tennis courts were where they are now with a school transportable which was demolished. The club was very strong back in the 1900s. The new construction of the courts in December 23 was not an easy job due to the many uses of the site. Initial excavations uncovered a series of caves or bunkers that were believed to have been built during WWI.
Willunga Tennis Club was on the brink of closure in 2021.
Currently, the club is alive and growing. There are junior teams playing in both winter and summer seasons in two districts, the GSTA and the SDTA. WTC is a very welcoming club that caters for all skill levels. Seniors have a dedicated club night and there is opportunity to compete in a Tuesday night social competition vs Mclaren Vale and Mclaren Flat which is lots of fun. WTC It is a not for profit organisation purely run by volunteers. WTC relies on community donations, our committee members and parents to donate time to volunteer otherwise our club could not stay alive.
WTC is more than a tennis club it is a community, a family, a sense of belonging where like minded people come together to experience the wonderful sport of tennis. Tennis takes emotional, mental and physical strength and regulation and this is fantastic for young players to focus on/maintain.
