It’s now that time of year where I have Gradings and Seminars here in Australia and overseas so will be traveling a lot over the next few months

During my travels I get asked a lot of Jiu-Jitsu related questions but more often than not it comes around to a question about gradings and graduation

I get asked many times by students and coaches about what is required at each belt level or what is it I’m looking for when it comes to gradings

The answer isn’t that simple as students all have different paths in Jiu-Jitsu and strengths and weaknesses, plus personal battles that no one may know about other than me or their instructor

But many years teaching and grading students gives you a good perspective on what you are looking for but one of the things I hear all too often is time and the expectation to be graded just because you have done a certain number of classes, or been training for a certain time period and that gives students an entitlement to be graded

Grand Master Carlson Sr said:
It is funny now people get asked to be promoted by time just because the IBJJF put minimum time on each belt.
DON’T FORGET THIS IS MINIMUM NOT MAXIMUM
If you ask me for a belt because you already pass your minimum time on your belt you are going to double your minimum time.
Promotion for me is understanding what each belt means... Not Time.
At the Carlson Gracie Academy if you ask about a promotion you’ll get a big are you crazy, go train and when I see you care more about the Jiu-Jitsu lifestyle than the colour of your belt you will be promoted

Marly Gracie the original woman of the Carlson Gracie Team

On international woman’s day a mention has to go to Donna Marly who I met many years ago in Brazil

She new everything that was going on at the Carlson Gracie Academy in Copacabana, nothing got past her

She was always good to me even though it was hard for us to communicate, we use to just smile at each other as neither one of us could understand the other

She use to have a picture of my son Hunter on her desk

If Master Jr is the Carlson Gracie Jr.Jitsu then must be the Queen!

Strong women settMarly Graciexample for those to come

Half Guard Drill to learn how to keep control of your opponent’s leg while transitioning

This is a great Basic drill to master as if you have to think about how to maintain control of the leg as soon as your focus moves to another area of control or defence your opponent is like to pass

Always look to master the Basics and never neglect to keep relearning them

Jiu-Jitsu just for the young, strong and athletic?

I am always proud of all my students who step up to compete as many give reasons why they don’t or can’t

Most of the time these reasons are just ways to justify to themselves that these reasons are not actually excuses

So for a person who signs up to represent themselves and the team has already won no matter the final result

The study of Jiu-Jitsu is about becoming a champion on and off the mat

My student William who competed today in Master 7 category of the Pan Pacific Jiu-Jitsu Championships had to be one of the oldest if not actually the oldest competitor

To see these two gentlemen battle it out was nothing short of inspirational

You could hear everyone watching commenting on the fight being inspired

It is never too late to start your journey in Jiu-Jitsu and if you never start maybe you will never actually find out what you are capable of

In Brazil it is Dia Do Mastre or Masters Day

It is a day to celebrate and honour your Teachers, Mentors,Instructors and Masters who have taught and given you guidance

Some times it is hard to see immediately how people positively effect your life and this is very true when it comes to teachers of all kinds

It’s usually only in later life that we realize the influence they have had in shaping who we become

I have had many teachers and instructors over the years but today I pay homage to Master Carlson Gracie Jr. and Grand Master Carlson Gracie Sr

I will continue to pass on your knowledge until my last breath
,
I do not profess to be the best in the world but I do promise to always do my best to be a positive influence on others as you have both been on me

Ooosss
