GRADE GRAND FINAL DAY

A massive day at WIN Stadium wrapped up the 2026 Illawarra Rugby League season, with our officials taking charge across the Harrigan Shield, Harrigan Plate and Harrigan Cup Grand Finals.

Congratulations to every referee and touch judge appointed across the three matches. Grand Final appointments are a reflection of the work put in across the entire season, and all officials represented the Association with professionalism throughout the day.

A special congratulations to William Damato, who achieved a major milestone by refereeing the Harrigan Cup Grand Final, alongside Liam Nicholls and Amelia Sheppard on the touchlines.

Well done also to Taylor Cleveland, Luke Purtell and Darren Van De Moosdyk in the Harrigan Shield, and Michael Chin, Isaac Warburton and Thomas Inness in the Harrigan Plate.

Thank you to every member who contributed throughout the 2026 season, whether on the field, coaching, supporting or working behind the scenes.

Proudly supported by our major sponsors Dwyers Truck Centre and Warrigal Charters , with thanks also to Extreme Carpet Cleaning, Wollongong, TLE Greentech Wollongong, Community Bank Wollongong and DP World for their continued support of the Association.

Continuing with our new daily series: Behind the Whistle!
Each day, we’ll shine a spotlight on a referee or touch judge who has helped shape, serve and contribute to the great game of rugby league.

Today we recognise Frank Leonard, graded official #788 and a proud product of the Illawarra Referees Association.

Frank worked as a touch judge and in-goal judge, recording 84 NSWRL first-grade games and 35 first-grade appointments in goal. His first-grade debut came in Round 1, 1992, when North Sydney met Canterbury-Bankstown at North Sydney Oval.

He earned State of Origin appointments in two roles: as an in-goal judge in 1991 and a touch judge in 1995. For Game II of the 1995 series, Frank ran the line alongside Martin Weekes at the MCG before a crowd of 52,994. He was also a touch judge for the 1995 Commonwealth Bank Cup Grand Final.

Frank’s contribution continued beyond his on-field appointments. Frank has more than 50 years of service to refereeing, including nine years as its Executive Officer. A Life Member of the association, he received another lasting honour in 2017: the trophy for the referee appointed to the Tarsha Gale Cup Grand Final was named the Frank Leonard Perpetual Trophy.

Frank helped keep the game moving on the field and helped support the officials who followed him.

Who will be featured tomorrow? Stay tuned!

A huge congratulations to all of our officials who took the field across the weekend for the Merged Competitions Grand Final Day.

The standard of officiating throughout the weekend was outstanding, with some great teamwork, professionalism and support shown both on and off the field.

It was also fantastic to see our officials working alongside and supporting our fellow referees from Group 7 Referees Association throughout the weekend. That sense of teamwork across associations is something we’re incredibly proud of.

A massive thank you also goes to every official who has contributed throughout the 2026 season. Your commitment, hard work and dedication each week is what allows us to reach this point of the season year after year.

We’re incredibly proud of the way our officials continue to represent the Illawarra Division Rugby League Referees Association.
