Happy 61st Birthday to Illawarra Steelers legend Ian Russell!

Russell debuted in '86 but didn't make his impact with the club until '88 and went on to play 114 First Grade games with the Steelers through '94. A talented ball playing lock, he was a vital part of the Illawarra core that emerged in the early '90s.

He won the Dally M Lock of the Year in '92 - and was a key figure in Illawarra's win in the '92 Tooheys Challenge Final over Brisbane, and their great season to sit in 3rd spot after 22 rounds, but he missed the Finals with a hamstring injury, and the Steelers were knocked out in the Preliminary Final by St George.

Russell also played in Illawarra's fairytale run to the '89 Panasonic Cup Final, despite sitting in 16th spot during the season, but Brisbane won.

He joined North Queensland for their debut season in '95 but would finish his career in the UK Super League with Paris in '96 and then Oldham in '97.

A Defining Moment ❤️🤍

One of the highlights of Robert 'Bob' Millward OAM's remarkable career came in 1990 with the opening of the Steelers Club.

Joined by rugby league and community dignitaries, ARL and NSWRL Executive Chairman Ken Arthurson officially cut the ribbon, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the Illawarra Steelers.

More than 35 years later, the Club remains at the heart of our community, a lasting legacy of Bob's vision, leadership and dedication.

Thank you, Bobby Steeler.

Steve Waddell (1966-2012) played 89 first grade games between 1988-1997 for Penrith and Illawarra. Waddell was a Lithgow junior who signed for Penrith in 1987. Waddell was a squad member of the Penrith sides which made the grand finals of 1990 and won the premiership the following year in 1991.

In 1992 he joined Illawarra and was part of the side which won the pre-season Tooheys Challenge Cup. In the same year he was voted as Illawarra's player of the season as the club made the preliminary final. In 1995 he returned to Penrith where he played three further seasons. Waddell is the father of current NRL player Corey Waddell.
