Huge thanks to Mitchel Mitchel for teaching an awesome workshop tonight focusing on Attacks from the Shin on Shin Guard! Mitch showed some foot sweep variations, wrestle ups, transitions to leg entanglements as well as an entry to a John Wayne Sweep. The workshop was very practical with lots of live time in the position and great details to take away from it! Thanks everyone for coming in!

Why do we actually have a points system in BJJ?
Itโs easy to think of points purely as a competition strategy - something you need to understand if you want to win matches.
But the scoring system also gives us a useful framework for understanding positional priorities in grappling.
It rewards taking someone down, getting on top, passing their guard and establishing dominant positions.
It gives greater value to positions such as mount and back control where we have strong submission opportunities, significant control and - in a broader fighting context - the ability to generate damage while limiting our opponentโs ability to do the same.
It also gives the person underneath an incentive to establish a guard and use that guard to attack, sweep and improve their position.
No ruleset perfectly represents every aspect of grappling or fighting but there is still value in understanding what the BJJ points system is trying to reward - and how those incentives can help guide the development of our skills in a positive direction.

Huge thanks to Sirena for teaching an awesome workshop focusing on Upper & Lower Body Submission Chains this week! Sirena showed how she transitions from an armbar into backside 50/50 and either attack the legs or chase the back from there. She also showed how she likes to attack the upper body from 50/50 and chase the back or wrestle up depending on their reaction. We all enjoyed and got a lot out of the workshop and highly recommend learning from Sirena if you get the chance! Thanks everyone for coming in!

Here is a great breakdown from David Stoil emphasising why it is important to extend our legs during a roll through to capture the knee line rather than pulling our knees to our chest!

Why Train in the Gi?
An underappreciated benefit of training in the Gi is that the additional grips and control points available are like a cheat code for skill development!
๐ฅ Working on your Berimbolo?
Better grips help you stabilise your position along the way and give you stronger opportunities to climb to the back.
๐ฅ Trying to improve your passing?
Use the grips to anchor yourself, control your partnerโs movement and spend more time working on the specific pathways you want to improve.
๐ฅ Developing your guard?
More robust grips help you maintain connection, control distance and create more opportunities to off-balance, sweep or submit.
๐ฅ Working on your foot sweeps?
Gi grips give you a greater ability to apply Kuzushi - the off-balance that precedes every trip or throw - and steer them down to the mat.
The goal isnโt to become dependent on the grips - we want to remain adaptable.
But we can use them to create an unfair advantage which allows us to spend more time developing the positioning, timing and control that ultimately make our skills work.
We will then have an easier time applying those skills in environments where we donโt have access to the same grips such as No-Gi.
