As Illawarra Rugby League’s season draws to a close, the highlight of 2026 was the exceptional growth in referees and volunteers, the backbone of the sport’s success.

While player numbers grew modestly to 4,300, up from 4,224 or 1.8%, the standout achievement was a surge in off-field support.

The number of registered coaches, trainers and volunteers reached 1,221, an increase of 118, or 10.7 per cent, from the 2025 total of 1,103.

Referee numbers reached 100 in 2026, up from 77 at the end of 2025, an increase of almost 30 per cent.

Collegians Senior Football League claimed the 2026 Harrigan Motor Group Cup with a record-breaking 56–12 victory over Corrimal Cougars RLFC, headlining a memorable Grand Final Day, presented by i98 FM, at WIN Stadium.

Collegians’ 56–12 triumph set multiple records: the highest team score in an Illawarra First Grade Grand Final, surpassing Thirroul’s 40 points in 1985; the greatest winning margin, eclipsing Dapto’s 40–4 victory over Collegians in 1999; and the most combined points in a final, beating the previous record from Wests’ 34–24 win over Helensburgh in 2011.

The victory redeemed Collegians’ heartbreaking extra-time defeat to Wests in the 2025 decider. For Corrimal, the result ended a breakthrough season in which the Cougars claimed the minor premiership and reached their first Grand Final since 1989.

Wests secured their fourth consecutive second grade title, with a dramatic 19–18 win over Corrimal in the Harrigan Plate, while Avondale Greyhounds secured their third consecutive Harrigan Shield title after holding off Northern Suburbs 26–14.
