There’s value in staying on the journey with things we’re not very good at yet.

This came up in our 7:15am post-class chat yesterday and seemed to resonate, so we figured it was probably worth sharing beyond the four walls of the gym.

CrossFit has a pretty reliable way of making a beginner out of all of us eventually.

And that’s not an accident.

We pursue difficult skills because what they demand of us is where the development happens.

You might spend years working towards a muscle-up, handstand walk or pull-up. Whether you master it or not, the work develops strength, coordination, control and capacity you didn’t have before.

And something else.

The ability to remain a student.

To be a beginner again. To not be good at something straight away. To miss reps, get it wrong, look a bit s**t for a while and keep showing up willing to learn.

There’s humility in that. And that’s a good place to be coached from.

That’s why difficult movements aren’t just for people who can already do them.

The pursuit of them is part of how we develop — physically and mentally.

Sometimes you get the movement. Sometimes you don’t.

Either way, you are better for having pursued it.

So why keep pursuing movements you might never get?

Being a good Dad and being a good man go hand in hand.

Providing. Protecting. Being present. Keeping your word. Looking after yourself so you can keep showing up for the people who count on you.

We’re proud to have a gym full of men doing exactly that.

Men who train hard. Get humbled. Take coaching. Encourage the bloke beside them. Keep showing up.

Not because fitness is the most important thing in their life.

Because being fit makes them more capable for the things that are.

And that example carries well beyond these four walls.

Your kids are watching.
Your mates are watching.
The people around you are better for it.

That’s community.
That’s leadership.

Talk the talk.
Walk the walk.
Show them the way.

To the good men raising good humans at CrossFit Bass Coast thank you for setting the standard.

Happy Father’s Day, Dads.

Keep leading from the front.

Our job is to coach.
Yours is to stay coachable.

The best progress happens when both sides lean into that.

We watch, teach, correct and challenge. We learn how you move, when to push the intensity and when to pull things back.

You bring the willingness to listen, ask questions, take on feedback and keep working at the things that don’t come easily.

Some days that means adding weight to the bar. Other days it means taking it off. Scaling a movement to preserve the intended stimulus. Slowing things down to get the mechanics right before adding intensity.

Sometimes it’s one small correction that finally makes something click.

That’s how coaching is supposed to work.

Come willing to learn.
Leave better than you came.

The more the world becomes artificial, the more this matters.

Because some things were never meant to be replicated.

Being known. Being noticed. Being challenged. Being needed. Belonging somewhere.

The person beside you who sees you struggling and stays.

The coach who knows your name, knows what you’re capable of, and cares enough to expect more from you.

The noise that erupts for the last person finishing.

The conversations before class. The suffering together. The laughter afterwards. The friendships between people whose paths might never have crossed anywhere else.

Different ages. Different abilities. Different lives.

One shared floor.

CrossFit gives us the methodology. The movements. The intensity. The pursuit of greater capacity.

But an affiliate gives us something profoundly human.

People who know when you show up.
And notice when you don’t.

In a world becoming increasingly artificial, places like this have never mattered more.

This is CrossFit Bass Coast.

This is community.

You shouldn’t have to already know what you’re doing before you walk into a gym.

That’s our job.

This is a new athlete learning to row.

Not being told to “jump on the rower.”
Not being handed a workout and left to figure it out.

Being coached.

Learning the positions. Understanding the sequence. Practising the movement. Receiving feedback. Getting better.

And this level of attention isn’t reserved for new athletes.

At CrossFit Bass Coast, coaching is our product.

Every class. Every athlete. Every level of experience.
We teach. We watch. We correct. We challenge. And as you improve, the coaching progresses with you.

Because there is a considerable difference between doing a workout and being coached.

If you’ve never experienced the latter, you might be surprised by what good coaching can do for you.

Come and experience the difference.
