Under 14 G - Wonthaggi U14s Secure Back-to-Back Grand Final Appearance with Dominant Semi-Final Win
Undefeated ladder-leaders Wonthaggi booked their place in a second consecutive Grand Final with a commanding semi-final victory over fourth-placed Mirboo North at Drouin on Sunday morning.
The reigning premiers came out firing in the first half, setting the tempo early through a masterclass in front of goal from Casey. The opening goal arrived after Mustafa setup Casey, who finished cleanly to give Wonthaggi the lead. Casey quickly doubled the advantage shortly after, before wrapping up a remarkable first-half hat-trick with a goal assisted by Aayush. Wonthaggi went into the break with a comfortable 3-0 cushion.
Wonthaggi picked up right where they left off in the second half, maintaining control and extending their lead when Casey notched his fourth of the morning.
The highlight of the match came on Wonthaggi's fifth goal. River sparked the attack with a brilliant run down the right wing before delivering a sharp, low cross into the box. Casey read the play perfectly, beating his defender to slot home his fifth goal of the game and cap off a clear Man of the Match performance.
Credit to Mirboo North, who refused to back down despite the deficit. They applied sustained pressure late in the half and capitalised when Wonthaggi struggled to clear their defensive lines, with Alby pulling a goal back for Mirboo North.
However, the late surge wasn't enough to threaten the outcome. Wonthaggi held firm to secure the victory and maintain their unbeaten record this season.
Guided by coach Dean, the squad now turns its focus to next Sunday's decider against the Phillip Island Penguins at Lang Lang, where they will look to defend their title to see if they can become back-to-back champions.
Under 12 A - League leaders Wonthaggi U12A secured their place in the Grand Final after earning a hard-fought 3-1 victory over fourth-placed Inverloch on Saturday afternoon.
Captain Norman led from the front with a standout first-half performance. Wonthaggi's relentless attacking pressure forced an early mistake from the Inverloch keeper, allowing Norman to pounce on the spilled ball and tap home the opener. Deeper into the half, Norman struck again, bursting through the defense to coolly slot home his second. Wonthaggi carried a 2-0 lead into the halftime break.
Inverloch came out fighting in the second half, mounting consistent pressure down the flank. Inverloch left winger Ari proved a constant threat with creative dribbling, putting defender Amity under heavy pressure, but she held firm alongside solid defensive support from Freddie and Olly to keep Inverloch's attack at bay.
Inverloch’s big chance to narrow the gap came when their number 43 was played through one-on-one against the goalkeeper Harvey, who reacted instantly rushing off his line to put his body in the way and block the shot - taking studs to the top of his foot in the process. After a brief injury timeout, Harvey put on a display of grit, shaking off the blow to stay in goal and see out the match.
Wonthaggi regained momentum with a clever tactical play, taking a corner short before Trav whipped a dangerous cross into the 6-yard box. The ball struck an Inverloch defender, who could do nothing as it deflected off him and into the net for an own goal.
Inverloch responded shortly after when Atticus produced a moment of individual brilliance, weaving past multiple Wonthaggi defenders and somehow squeezing a finish into the tight gap between the keeper's foot and the post.
Despite Inverloch's late push, Wonthaggi defended their lead to seal the 3-1 win.
Coaches Tony and Leigh have done an incredible job guiding this group through a determined campaign. Wonthaggi now turns its focus to next Saturday’s Grand Final in Trafalgar, where they will square off against Drouin in what promises to be a thrilling decider.
