π Mastering the Journey to Black Belt π In this image, Master Instructor Vernon Low is testing Black Belt candidates on their patterns (hyungs) as part of the rigorous Black Belt examination process. At every First Tae Kwon Do Black Belt exam, candidates are tested on: Basics, All kicks, Self-defense techniques, Destruction, (breaking) , Sparring & all patterns.
In the Chang Hon series of TaeKwonDo patterns, practiced in traditional ITF-style TaeKwonDo, the number of movements in each pattern (hyung) from 10th Kup to 1st Kup demonstrates a structured progression of complexity and skill:
β
Sajyo Jirugi (10th Kup): 7 movements
β
Chon-Ji (9th Kup): 19 movements
β
Dan-Gun (8th Kup): 21 movements
β
To-San (7th Kup): 24 movements
β
Won-Hyo (6th Kup): 28 movements
β
Yul-Gok (5th Kup): 38 movements
β
Joong-Gun (4th Kup): 32 movements
β
Toi-Gye (3rd Kup): 37 movements
β
Hwa-Rang (2nd Kup): 29 movements
β
Choong-Moo (1st Kup): 30 movements
π’ Total Movements: 265
This progression reflects not only increasing complexity but also the deepening skill set required to excel in traditional TaeKwonDo. To succeed in this critical part of the Black Belt exam, candidates must demonstrate more than just memorizationβthey must showcase power, balance, flexibility, and mastery of each techniques in each of the 265 movements.
