A Drink Between Friends
December 1916. Longueval, France.
In the midst of the mud, noise and heartbreak of the First World War, this photograph captures a quiet moment of compassion.
An Australian driver patiently gives his horse a drink at an Australian Comforts Fund stall, while fellow soldiers wait their turn for a drink of their own.
There is something deeply moving about this scene. The horse drinks first.
For Australian Light Horsemen and transport drivers, horses were never simply a means of transport. They were trusted companions, loyal partners and, often, a soldier's closest friend. Together they endured exhausting marches, shellfire, freezing winters, scorching summers and the daily uncertainty of war.
The bond between a soldier and his horse was built on absolute trust. A horse carried its rider into danger, relied on gentle hands for care and, in return, gave unwavering courage and loyalty. Many soldiers would go without their own comfort to ensure their horse was fed, watered and rested first.
It is a reminder that even amid the brutality of war, kindness endured.
Lest we forget the horses of war.
