⛵ A few more from Hamilton Island Race Week 2026

Some late photos from Heats 5 and 6 have made their way back to us, and they were too good not to share.

Plenty of colour, plenty of breeze, and a few great shots of our CCYC crew out on the water.

The Race Week media crew also apparently found a new nickname for our Commodore along the way… “Pink Santa.” 🎅💗

We think it may stick.

⛵️ CCYC at Hamilton Island Race Week 2026⛵️

“When the going gets tough, the tough get going.”

And there was certainly no shortage of tough sailing at the 41st Hamilton Island Race Week.

A fleet of 194 boats took to the Whitsundays this year, with five CCYC boats flying the flag for our club across a week that delivered everything from spectacular sailing to seriously challenging conditions.

The first four heats were described as decidedly “fruity”, with rain squalls producing gusts of up to 38 knots. There was plenty of carnage across the fleet. The very first race saw the capsize of a sports boat, while nearly half the crew of a prominent TP52 went overboard.

At least six masts were lost in the first three heats, with the sail loft on the island working through the nights to meet demand.

Against that backdrop, our CCYC crews produced some fantastic results.

⚓️ Vivacious – Kev Lord
Two 2nd places and a 3rd saw Vivacious finish an outstanding 2nd overall in the Multihull White Division.

⚓️ Rhomberg Sersa (Final Fling) – Rod Sweeny
Scored a 3rd place in the brutal opening race.

⚓️ Moderation – Phil Farrands
Finished strongly with a 3rd in Heat 5 and a race win in Heat 6.

⚓️ Storm Bay – Marc Gerard
Claimed a win in multihull racing in the final island race.

⚓️ Volantis
Withdrew from Heat 1 when the winds settled in at around 30 knots, then sat out the fruity early heats. Volantis returned in Heat 5 to take line honours in Multihull White, finishing 4th on PHS.

Perhaps the most dramatic moment of the week came with the loss of the 82-foot Oyster yacht Viva la Vida, which lost its keel and slowly capsized in the Whitsunday Passage in full view of the majority of the racing fleet. The yacht was left semi-submerged and upside down following the incident. Most importantly, all crew were safely taken off the boat.

Through wild weather, close racing and plenty of stories that will no doubt be retold at the bar for some time, it was fantastic to see CCYC so strongly represented at one of Australia’s great sailing events.

A huge congratulations to all of our skippers, crews and supporters who made the trip north and represented the club so brilliantly.

And judging by the photos, there may even have been a little fun had off the water too. 🍻⛵

Sunday looked pretty good from where we were sitting. ☀️⚓

The deck was full, RELIC had the whole place rocking, the dancefloor was busy, Rosslyn Bay Fish Market Seafood Platters and fish and chips were heading out of the kitchen, drinks were cold and the marina put on another spectacular finish to the day.

There was such a great energy around the club, with tables full of conversation, plenty of dancing, people settling in for the afternoon and more than a few reasons to stay for just one more drink.

Thanks to everyone who came down and spent their Sunday with us. What a great afternoon. 💙

It’s been a fantastic few weeks of racing for some familiar CCYC faces, with impressive results from Indonesia through to Airlie Beach.

🌏 Darwin to Banda Neira

Joel Kluver, crew from Barracuda, joined the team aboard Tramontana for the Darwin to Banda Neira Race, sailing into Banda Neira, Indonesia, on Tuesday 4 August to claim 1st place in Division 2.

After two and a half days of racing, Tramontana secured the win by an impressive 40 minutes on corrected time. Congratulations Joel and team!

⛵ Airlie Beach Race Week

Meanwhile, Barracuda was being prepared for a huge week at Airlie Beach Race Week by Tim and Bronson McCall, Errolyn Moore, Chris “Little Chris” Mann, Chris “Big Chris” Smithers, with David Mann at the helm.

The team put together an incredibly consistent series, achieving a podium finish in each of their first six races.

Despite having to retire from the final race due to rig issues, those results were enough to secure 1st Overall in the Performance Racing Division! 🏆

A huge congratulations to everyone involved. It’s wonderful to see our CCYC sailing community represented so strongly on the water.
