Is your water baby ready for the summer?

Drowning is the second leading cause of death in young children, which means it’s smart to remember these pool safety guidelines.

Wondering what the data says about swim lessons for babies and toddlers? There’s some evidence that swim lessons (after age 1) may increase a child's safety around water (one study found that swim lessons for 1- to 4-year-old children may reduce drowning risk by 88%) but it’s important to note that there’s no evidence that swim lessons entirely eliminate the risk of drowning. It’s for this reason that staying within reach of your child whenever they are in the water and ensuring there are other safety precautions in place (a four-sided pool fence, for instance) is the best way to keep your toddler safe around water.

What about swim lessons for infants younger than 1? There’s nothing wrong with (and plenty of positives to) water acclimation lessons for infants. Getting babies used to and comfortable in the water is great. But lessons for babies under 1 that promise to reduce drowning risk should be approached more skeptically. While infants have the reflex to perform basic swim movements, they can’t understand safety protocols in the pool or how to react in an emergency, which makes it unlikely that swim lessons for babies under 1 increase their safety in the water. And in fact, there’s no research on ISR or "survival" swimming lessons that shows these approaches makes infants safer in the water. That said, “no research” doesn’t mean these lessons are not effective, just that they shouldn’t be relied on to ensure 100% safety (and that’s why the rest of the tips in this post are so important, so there’s a multi-layered approach to water safety).
