#TRICKTUESDAY // Full Rudi Straight

The full rudi straight you see in this video looks more like a rudi-in full-out. This is because the twist is spread out evenly throughout the skill. This happens through a process called globalization. Globalization means we transition our skills into one dynamic movement instead of robotically connecting all our progressions in the air.

Despite how my full rudi looks, I still think of it as barani-cruise-rudi. This helps me break down the skill and maintain my aerial awareness. This way of thinking comes directly from the prerequisites and progressions I used to learn full rudi straight.

There are many prerequisite skills for full rudi, but the ones I found most helpful are half full tuck, half full straight, and full rudi tuck. They all follow the same pattern of progressions and place particular emphasis on spotting the bed after the cruise (which should finish by 1&¼ rotations). The tuck versions are beneficial because they help you control the twist. Tuck skills will always twist slower than straight skills, and we need to control our twist speed if we want to spot the bed and assist our aerial awareness.

The progressions for half full and full rudi are as follows;

1️⃣ Barani to back
2️⃣ Barani, cruise to stomach
3️⃣ Barani, cruise, duck under
4️⃣ Barani cruise, barani
5️⃣ Barani, cruise, rudi

These progressions can be applied to the tuck and straight versions. They allowed me to build up to an “old-school” full rudi straight that looked a little robotic and had a big pause after the cruise to spot the bed. The globalization process slowly eliminates that pause while maintaining your aerial awareness.

To start the globalization process, I focused on the cruise. I thought about pulling my shoulders around faster to complete the cruise sooner. I would spot the bed quickly and initiate my rudi as soon as I saw the trampoline. Over time and numerous repetitions, I became very comfortable with this movement and could tell when it was time to rudi purely based on feel, without spotting the bed. This slowly turned my barani-cruise-rudi into the globalized full rudi straight you see in the video.
