An important study for anyone interested in the history of horses and horsemanship.

In The Disappearance of the Turk, Professor Donna Landry examines a major but often overlooked chapter in the formation of the English Thoroughbred. The article argues that the contribution of Turkoman horses was not peripheral, but fundamentally formative. The Byerley Turk and other Turkoman bloodstock helped shape the emerging Thoroughbred, although their role was gradually obscured as later accounts increasingly presented the breed’s eastern ancestry as almost exclusively Arabian.

The article also draws attention to the striking physical resemblance between the English Thoroughbred and the modern Akhal-Teke, supported by genome research. The Akhal-Teke is presented as the modern breed that most clearly preserves the characteristics of the historical Turkoman horse.

This is not merely a matter of cultural pride. It is a matter of historical accuracy.

For centuries, Turkic horsemanship represented a highly developed culture of selective breeding, training, endurance, mobility and partnership between horse and rider. Across the Eurasian steppe and the wider Turkic world, Turkoman horses were valued for their speed, stamina, strength, intelligence and ability to travel great distances under difficult conditions. They shaped military history, diplomacy, trade and everyday life—and, as this study demonstrates, their influence also reached the foundations of one of the world’s most important and recognisable horse breeds.

The horses featured on our page are Akhal-Tekes in modern breed terminology. The name Turkoman horses of Azerbaijan deliberately recalls the wider historical identity and equestrian tradition that these horses represent.

To preserve and promote them is therefore to preserve more than a rare and beautiful breed. It is to safeguard a living part of Turkic history and to restore due recognition to a horse culture whose contribution to world equestrian heritage has too often remained hidden.

Prezident İlham Əliyev Rusiya Federasiyasının Dağıstan Respublikasının tanınmış ictimai-siyasi xadimi Qurban Qurbanova “Dostluq” ordenini təqdim edərkən deyib: “Mənim otağımda heykəl var. Bu heykəl Mahaçqalada Əziz Əliyevin kabinetində olub. Dağıstanlılar onu qoruyub saxlayıb və bu yaxınlarda mənə bağışlayıblar.

Mənim nə bu otağımda, nə də digər iş kabinetlərimdə heç bir heykəl yoxdur, təkcə bu var. Bu, təəssüf ki, mən xatırlamıram, amma həm azərbaycanlıların, həm də dağıstanlıların tarixi yaddaşında yaşayan babamın yadigarıdır.

Beləliklə, bizim ortaq cəhətlərimiz çoxdur və bir daha demək istəyirəm: Dağıstan və Azərbaycan xalqları arasında qardaşlıq münasibətlərinin möhkəmləndirilməsi bir çox hallarda bütün Qafqaz regionunun davamlı inkişafından asılıdır”.
