Match Report 1 - Carlton Juniors v CounterPoint Wanderers B
Date: Sunday, January 12, 2014
Venue: Briar Hall Community Centre

Today, Carton Juniors commenced its campaign in the National Under 13 Cricket competition for clubs and community groups with a match against Counterpoint Wanderers "B" at the picturesque Briar Hall Community Centre ground in Christ Church.

The 2014 edition of the tournament is again jointly sponsored by Inspire Sport and the National Sports Council (NSC) and has attracted 16 teams from across the island divided into two zones. Our team is competing in Zone B and is being led by returning Captain Zidane Clarke who has alongside him several players that featured in the 2013 edition.

The match experienced a delayed start due to heavy rain from the previous night and intermittent showers both early and mid-morning that in fact resulted in the abandonment of most of the day's other scheduled matches. Due to the commendable efforts of the NSC ground staff and the willingness of both sets of players and the umpires to have play, the match finally commenced at 2.30 p.m., well after the appointed start time of Noon. The playing conditions were altered and the match reduced to a 20-over per side affair with the innings cut-off at 3.50 p.m and a single refreshment break at the 10-over mark.

At the toss, Zidane called incorrectly and the home captain had no hesitation in inserting our boys to have first knock on the weather-impaired pitch - a new experience for our boys who have been nurtured on concrete practice strips and covered pitches back home in Black Rock.

Our boys generally struggled with the conditions agains modest opposition and by the 5th over we had lost both openers and our No. 3 Kai Rollins with only 15 runs on the board. In truth, the batsmen all shaped well with Kai promising something special when he scored consecutive boundaries off the first two deliveries faced including the shot of the day - an exquisite back foot punch through the off side that was spoilt by him advancing down the wicket to complete a run. The common thread in all three dismissals was playing too early on the front front with techniques more suited to harder surfaces, though the only real problem with Jonathan Douglin's front front drive was that it picked out the man precisely placed at cover who took a neat catch inches off the ground.

The batting rallied for a while as the captain tried diligently to hold the innings together. However, after he was 6th out in the 12th over for a well played 17 off 25 balls, with only 49 on the board and with threatening clouds about, the team was definitely in a bit of a bother, with their opponents now backing themselves to pull off a major upset.

After a short rain break, cometh the hour, cometh the man. That man was senior player Amari Waithe who has been having a lean period of late with the bat. With time running out and the need to put some runs on the board, Amari played an absolute cameo before he was bowled with 2 balls remaining in the 18th and ultimately last over of the innings. His contribution of 23 off 19 balls including 4 boundaries would later turn out to be a significant game changer. He was ably assisted during this period by the young and pint-sized Nicholas Austin marking his debut in the tournament who contributed 8 off 21 balls. Together they crafted the day's best partnership of 22 for the 7th wicket.

The innings finished at 83/8 off 18 overs including 18 sundries, with Christian Weatherhead being the most successful bowler for the home team with 3/20 off his allotted 4 overs.

The bowling performance was a disciplined effort that started with consecutive maidens by new ball bowlers Kai Rollins and left-armer Justin Moore. Their good start was backed up in the middle overs by the pacy Savio Fergusion who we look forward to seeing bowl on harder surfaces, along with the standout pacer for the day, Rishon Goodman. Rishon's final figures of 2/10 off 4 overs was reward for consistently hitting the best lines of any medium pacer on show during the day.

While the expected and deserved outcome was a victory for Carlton Juniors, the day belonged to one man. Amari came to the bowling crease and put an exclamation point on the innings and the match by finishing off the home team's batting effort with a unbroken spell of 3.4-0-11-5. The final score was 48 off 17.4 overs including 22 sundries, with the sole double innings contribution from opening batsman Damel Evelyn who made a gutsy 13 of 26 balls.

Victory to Carlton Juniors by 35 Runs!!!!

The next scheduled match is Sunday, January 19, 2014, where our team will engage Community Cricket League at the Franklyn Stephenson Academy Ground in Bennetts, St. Thomas. Play commences at Noon and we look forward to family and club support as our boys continue their wonderful adventure.
