We should have expected that the teachings of Dr. Yanique Hume’s @yaniquehume “Kalunga Crossing: Dancing the Sacred Waters” at the Cynthia Wilson Arts Lecture Theatre would continue the next day as we exited the sea as a group at Brown’s Beach…We give so much thanks for the blessing of New Waves! BIM Lead Facilitator, Dr. Yanique Hume. Let’s Dance! Dr. Yanique Hume is an interdisciplinary scholar, priestess, dancer, and choreographer who specializes in the festive and sacred arts and popular cultures of the Caribbean and broader African Diaspora. She is Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Cultural Studies at the University of West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. Dr. Hume is the co-editor of Caribbean Cultural Thought: From Plantation to Diaspora (2013); Caribbean Popular Culture: Power, Politics and Performance (2016); and Passages and Afterworlds: Anthropological Perspectives on Death in the Caribbean (2018). As a dancer and choreographer, Dr. Hume has worked with companies in her native Jamaica as well as in Cuba, Haiti, and Brazil. She is the recipient of grants from the Social Science Research Council, the International Development Research Centre, Ford Foundation, and the Wenner Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research. 📸 by New Waves! As I said when it was the Artists of Ailey—and this advice is for every dance company whose standard is career artists with 10,000 hours of training—you gotta pay people what they’re worth. If the pay doesn’t qualify a dancer for an apartment without a guarantor and two roommates, you’re not paying enough. If your employees need to work over-time (teaching classes) to make ends meet, you’re not paying enough. If you allot only $40 per diem when you take your employees away from home in 2024 (or 2014 for that matter), and they have to pull from their salaries to eat on the road, you’re not expensing at par. And if you put your people on probation for the first 90 days of every year regardless of their years of service to the organization, how can they develop a level of fealty that would endear them enough to forgive any of the above? Also, banning alums from the building unless they’re buying class or a ticket to the show? There’s nothing more capitalistic and anti-ringshout than that. (And be advised, the ringshout is lucrative right now.) I love this company, its founder, this legacy and this building, partly because in it I learned how valuable for growth it is to be called out on it—be it pirouette or attitude—when it ain’t right. Right now, it ain’t right. So I’m holding the mic for these dancers… #solidarity #union #dancers #fairwages
