Mark is Under-19 tennis champ
MIKAIL MARK is Barbados’ Under-19 table tennis champion.
The talented right-hander won the Under-19 title when the finals of the Barbados Table Tennis Association’s National Championships took place at the Table Tennis Centre, Nursery Drive recently.
Mark, son of former national head coach Clifton Mark, defeated Antonio Hamilton in straight games 11-5, 11-8, 11-8.
National junior player Maleeq Aimey took the Under-15 title by beating fellow junior national Jashon Smith 10-12, 11-5, 11-3, 16-14. Aimey also won the Under-13 championship, taking out Scott Galbraith in straight games 11-8, 11-4, 11-4.
Shania Hoyte beat her sister Jakaila Hoyte 12-10, 10-12, 17-15, 11-5 to win the Under-15 girls’ title. Shania is the daughter of former Caribbean champion Kevin Farley, who made a return to the national championships this season and won the men’s singles title, beating perennial winner Mark Dowell in the final. Both girls are members of the Caribbean Unity Sports Club where Farley is the head coach.
Romario Gill and Antonio Hamilton combined to win the men’s doubles from Mark Dowell and Qushawn Smith 5-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-9. Mark and Hamilton captured the junior doubles title, beating Aimey and Galbraith 11-7, 11-13, 11-2, 9-11, 11-7.
National women’s coach Julia Morris-Young offered congratulations to the players and expressed satisfaction with the junior tournament despite the challenges being faced in developing the sport.
“The players who put in the most work got the best results,” Morris-Young told MIDWEEK SPORT as she reflected on the championships.
Morris-Young cited Maleeq Aimey and Scott Galbraith as two examples of the hardworking players at Junior level.
The former Caribbean Junior champion said it was satisfying to witness the success of the players who set high goals. She was also pleased about the inclusion of junior girls in the national championships.
Morris-Young identified difficulty in acquiring equipment and the variety of sporting options available as two challenges faced by table tennis.
“The main challenges are lack of equipment in the schools and having to compete with other sports within the competition calendar. Some players also lack self-motivation. There is also a need for more coaches but this is being addressed,” said Morris-Young. (PH
