North South University Readmission: Tahsin’s move from Economics to Media and Journalism at North South University (NSU) in her third semester highlights the importance of finding a major that matches one’s personality. Although Economics is a high-demand field, Nuzhat found the heavy focus on abstract mathematical models and data points disconnected from her passion for social narratives. "I realized that analyzing market trends wasn't as fulfilling as documenting the human stories behind those trends," she explains. "Journalism allows me to merge information with a creative, narrative lens that Economics simply couldn't provide."
NSU’s framework facilitates such changes after the first semester, provided there are vacant seats in the desired department and the necessary transfer fees are paid. This structured flexibility enabled Nuzhat to transition into a field where her storytelling skills could truly thrive.

World Health Organization (WHO) has identified an “immunity gap” in routine childhood vaccination over the past two years as the primary cause of the ongoing measles outbreak in Bangladesh. The disease has now spread to 56 districts across the country.
In a written response, the WHO’s Dhaka office reported that 69% of infected children are under two years old, and 34% are under nine months, highlighting the high vulnerability among very young children. The agency has expressed deep concern over the current situation.
Bangladesh had been making steady progress toward eliminating measles and rubella, in line with WHO South-East Asia regional targets, which aim to stop endemic transmission by 2026. This requires maintaining zero transmission for at least 12 consecutive months. Between 2022 and 2025, measles incidence remained low ranging from 0.72 to 1.60 cases per million people. However, the rate has now surged sharply to 16.8 per million.
As of 30 March, 2,190 suspected measles cases have been reported, including 676 laboratory-confirmed infections. While the outbreak has affected most of the country, eight districts—Rangamati, Bagerhat, Meherpur, Joypurhat, Gaibandha, Lalmonirhat, Panchagarh and Bandarban—have not yet reported any cases. The nationwide incidence level indicates widespread transmission. The Dhaka office informed WHO headquarters in Geneva about the outbreak on 18 March. Meanwhile, local reports suggest that the death toll has exceeded 50.
The WHO works in Bangladesh in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Directorate General of Health Services, and the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI), which has historically been a successful initiative. However, despite this success, the current outbreak has emerged due to gaps in immunity.
According to the WHO’s preliminary assessment, children under two—especially those who missed one or more vaccine doses in the past two years—are most affected. The high proportion of infections among infants further underscores the risks associated with missed vaccinations.
Although Bangladesh maintained relatively high immunisation coverage—83.9% in 2019 and 81.6% in 2023—disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to an increase in zero-dose and partially vaccinated children. In addition, inconsistent coverage of the first and second doses of the measles vaccine has allowed a susceptible population to grow over time.
When vaccination coverage declines or becomes uneven, immunity gaps form within certain age groups. As these gaps widen, the risk of outbreaks increases, especially for highly contagious diseases like measles.
The WHO warns that the future course of the outbreak will depend on how quickly and effectively response measures are implemented. Rapid, high-coverage vaccination campaigns and improved surveillance could bring the outbreak under control. However, if immunity gaps persist, cases may continue to rise and spread further.
To address the situation, the WHO has recommended several urgent measures: nationwide measles and rubella vaccination campaigns targeting children aged six months to five years; stronger surveillance and rapid case reporting; improved clinical care, including vitamin A supplementation; enhanced public communication and community engagement; and strengthening routine immunization services.
Public health expert Mushtaq Hossain, a former chief scientific officer at the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research, emphasized the importance of properly implementing these recommendations. He noted that shortages of trained personnel at field, district, and central levels remain a major challenge. Addressing these gaps and ensuring community involvement will be essential to controlling the outbreak.
