Austria-Hungary: The Empire Doomed to Collapse

By the late 19th century, Austria-Hungary remained one of Europe’s major empires, but its position had already begun to weaken. After military defeats and the loss of influence in Germany and Italy, the Habsburg state faced growing internal pressure. A vast multiethnic empire, it brought together dozens of peoples with different languages, interests, and political ambitions - a combination that steadily undermined its stability.

The empire tried to preserve balance through political compromises, most notably the 1867 settlement, but these measures only delayed the crisis. Rising nationalism, tensions in Central Europe, and instability in the Balkans turned Austria-Hungary into a focal point of conflict. The annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, rivalry with the Russian Empire, and deep internal divisions only accelerated the process.

In 1918, Austria-Hungary disappeared from the map of Europe. Its collapse created a geopolitical vacuum in the heart of the continent, led to the emergence of new states, and laid the foundations for the conflicts that would shape the 20th century. This is the story of an empire that failed to hold itself together - and in doing so, reshaped the balance of power in the world.

The History of Greenland

Greenland's history begins with a Viking exile. In 982, Erik the Red was banished from Iceland for murder and founded a colony on the world's largest island. From there, his son Leif Erikson set foot in North America almost five centuries before Columbus. The Norse who lived here traded walrus ivory with Europe, sold narwhal teeth as "unicorn horns," and both fought and bargained with the Inuit. Then, around 1500, the colonies vanished - and historians still argue about why.

By the twentieth century, this frozen island had become the key to the North Atlantic. The United States tried three times to buy it - in 1868, 1910, and 1946. During World War II, fourteen American bases operated on its coasts, and US forces clashed with German weather stations on the eastern shore. During the Cold War, Thule Air Base held nuclear weapons, while engineers secretly designed an underground city of ballistic missiles beneath the ice - Project Iceworm. Today Greenland is a self-governing nation, and Arctic geopolitics increasingly turns on what happens here.

Goths vs the Roman Empire: The War That Changed Europe

The Goths entered the Roman Empire in 376 not as conquerors, but as refugees fleeing the Huns. Rome allowed them to cross the Danube, yet instead of integration they faced hunger, corruption, and abuse. What was meant to be a controlled settlement quickly turned into a war the empire could no longer manage. The turning point came in 378 at the Battle of Adrianople, where a Roman army was destroyed and Emperor Valens was killed - a moment that revealed the empire’s weakening grip on its borders.

In the decades that followed, the Goths emerged as an independent force operating on equal terms with Rome. They moved through the Balkans, invaded Italy, and in 410 sacked Rome, striking at the symbolic center of the ancient world. But the true significance of this conflict lies in its consequences: it changed Europe by breaking the old balance of power and opening the way for a new era. The Visigoths established their own kingdom in Gaul and later in Spain, blending Roman traditions with new political structures. This transformation marked the beginning of medieval Europe and the end of the Roman world as it had existed for centuries.

Medieval Europe: Every Kingdom's Rise and Fall

The history of medieval Europe is not just a sequence of events, but a process in which the modern world was shaped. After the collapse of the old order, the continent became an arena of constant struggle: tribes turned into kingdoms, empires rose and fell, and wars, religion, and power determined who would control Europe.

This video shows how a system of nations and states emerged from chaos. From empires to kingdoms, from fragmentation to new centers of power — these processes shaped Europe as we know it today. It is a story of the balance between unity and conflict that defined not only the continent, but influenced the course of world history.

The Conquista: The War That Made Spain a Global Superpower

The Conquista was the war that made Spain a global superpower. Between 1519 and 1533, a few hundred conquistadors under Hernán Cortés and Francisco Pizarro brought down the Aztec Empire and the Inca Empire - the largest civilizations of pre-Columbian America. The Europeans had steel, gunpowder, and Old World diseases on their side. But the outcome was not decided by weapons. Cortés was carried into Tenochtitlán by Aztec vassals who hated their overlords. Pizarro reached the Incas just as they had finished tearing themselves apart in the civil war between Atahualpa and Huáscar. The Spaniards did not break these empires - they walked into cracks that were already open. Aztec gold and Inca silver became the foundation of the Spanish colonial empire that dictated terms to Europe for two centuries. The Conquista redrew the map of the world.
