The culturally diverse neighborhood has become known for its trendy local businesses, as well as its popularity with artists, musicians and creative. The neighborhood is centered on the eponymous Echo Park Lake. Echo Park Lake also hosts community events, such as the annual Lotus Festival every July. In 1891 the four owners of the surrounding area gave up 33 acres (13 ha) of land to the city around the reservoir so that it could be used as a park. The city began work landscaping the park in October 1892. City parks superintendent Joseph Henry Tomlinson is recognized for coining the name of the new park, which later became the name of the neighborhood. He chose the name because of echoes he heard during the construction of Echo Park Lake in 1892. By 1895, the park and accompanying boathouse were completed.

Eco Parks are self-sustaining systems that generate their own energy, harvest and clean their own water and produce their own food. The Eco Park model includes the construction of sustainable housing and community buildings. A great deal of care is taken to ensure that these structures are designed with the highest thermal efficiencies and natural lighting principles possible. All Eco Parks have strict zero-waste policies in place. Eco Parks are models, not only for community-based social responsibility programs, but also for how food-security and community health are best addressed in one fully-integrated system.

They are parks which use ecological landscape features to reduce watering and other maintenance while enhancing wildlife and human values. We live in a world where biodiversity, environmental justice, climate change, habitat protection, and sustainable economic development are both social and environmental needs. If instead we tend land from the perspective that humans are part of the integrated ecological reality - that people belong in nature - parks can help us break down the dichotomy between nature and culture.
