MEET THE SPEAKER MONDAY
We’re excited to introduce Nick Derutter
🗣️ Talk: Filmmaken in Extreme Onderwater Omgevingen

MEET THE SPEAKER MONDAY
We’re excited to introduce Professor Simon Mitchell
🗣️ Talk: Oxygem exposure limits. Background and update on the new limit for 1.5 atm.
As technical diving has steadily progressed in depth and duration, divers have frequently been reaching and exceeding ‘CNS’ oxygen exposure limits prescribed by the NOAA guidelines. Indeed, it has almost become necessary for divers undertaking MOD 3 or ‘explorer’ level courses to be taught to breach these limits. In 2024 an expert panel undertook a review of the scientific pedigree of the old limits, and sought any recent evidence that might inform their modification. This presentation describes the process and outcome of this review.
Professor Simon Mitchell will also present a second session:
🗣️ Arterial blood gas changes in extreme freediving
Competitive freedivers are frequently reaching depths in excess of 100m. Hypoxic blackout during ascent is a feared complication of such dives. Several groups have investigated changes in arterial oxygen levels at depth and during ascent, but these studies have typically involved single divers and/or single depths. We recently undertook a study with 3 freedivers performing dives to 20, 40, 60, and 80m with arterial blood sampling across this depth range to truly “map” the changes in blood oxygen and carbon dioxide levels that occur. The results of this study will be presented.
