Tenants rejoice as Lagos Government proposes law that bars landlords from evicting tenants without court orders

The Lagos State Government has proposed the Lagos State Tenancy and Recovery of Premises Bill 2025 (Draft), which criminalizes harassment and illegal evictions by landlords. The bill makes it an offence for landlords to eject tenants without a valid court order or use self-help measures such as cutting utilities, dismantling parts of a building, or using force.

Section 10 of the bill states that landlords must not disturb a tenant’s quiet and peaceable enjoyment of the premises, including interfering with electricity, water supply, or structural elements of the property.

Section 43 adds that anyone who forcibly ejects a tenant, threatens, molests, or wilfully damages property with the intent to evict without a court order commits an offence and is liable to a minimum fine of N1,000,000 or up to six months’ imprisonment, or both.

Section 33 allows courts to assess whether rent increases are justified by considering rent levels in similar areas, evidence from both parties, and any special circumstances relating to the property. Landlords are prohibited from evicting tenants while disputes are ongoing.

Sections 20–24 streamline dispute resolution by filing cases via originating summons, scheduling hearings within 14 days, and limiting mediation to 30 days. Section 12 requires landlords to provide tenants with accounts of service charges and security deposits every six months. The bill also affirms tenants’ rights to privacy, peaceful enjoyment, access to common areas, and compensation for approved improvements.

The law comes in response to frequent reports of landlords locking out tenants, breaking into apartments, or using thugs to enforce evictions, reinforcing Lagos State’s commitment to protecting tenants’ rights.

More Woes for Bandits as Kano Mobilises 4,444 Qur’an Reciters for Statewide Prayers Amid Rising Insecurity

No fewer than 4,444 Qur’an reciters gathered on Saturday for a full day of special prayers seeking peace and improved security in Kano State, following recent bandit attacks in parts of the state.

The prayer session, convened by the Kano State Government at the Government House, brought together Islamic scholars, traditional leaders, and top government officials. The event aimed to seek divine intervention as communities in the Kano North senatorial district grapple with rising security threats, including the recent abduction of at least 15 residents and the killing of one woman.

The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, senior government officials, religious leaders, traditional rulers, and community representatives were all in attendance.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf described the insecurity challenge as a non-partisan issue that requires collective action.

Insecurity does not discriminate based on politics or party affiliation. It affects everyone equally. That is why all hands must be on deck to confront this threat together and restore safety to Kano, he said.
He noted that his administration has been strengthening support for security agencies through logistics and ongoing collaboration with their leadership to ensure timely responses to threats. According to him, the state will continue working closely with security operatives to safeguard lives and property.

Governor Yusuf added that mass prayer sessions serve as a spiritual complement to physical security efforts and deserve the backing of all citizens.

Several prominent Islamic clerics, including Sheikh Tijjani Bala Kalarawi, Sheikh Dr. Muhammad Sani Ashir, Sheikh Adam Abba Koki, Sheikh Nasir Kabara, Sheikh Abdullahi Uwaisu Madabo, Sheikh Dr. Mujtaba Abdulkadir Bauchi, and Gwani Lawi Gwani Dankillori of Maiduguri, also emphasised the continued importance of prayers in confronting the state’s se

Just In: Federal Government Secures Freedom of 100 Abducted Schoolchildren in Niger State

The Federal Government has reportedly facilitated the release of 100 schoolchildren kidnapped from St. Mary’s Private Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State.

The abduction occurred on 21 November 2025, when armed attackers invaded the remote community around 2:00 a.m. Riding on motorbikes, the bandits operated for nearly three hours, sweeping through student hostels and taking 315 people including 303 students and 12 teachers.

Security agencies, assisted by local hunters, launched extensive search operations across surrounding forests. Within the first 24 hours, 50 pupils managed to escape and reunited with their families.

Despite the early breakthrough, 265 individuals, 253 children and all 12 teachers, remained in captivity.
In response, the Federal Government imposed a 24-hour security lockdown and deployed aerial surveillance across parts of Niger, Kebbi, and Kwara States. President Bola Tinubu also cancelled an international trip to oversee rescue efforts, while authorities ordered the indefinite closure of all schools in Niger State and several federal institutions in vulnerable areas.
