The Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters, maintaining the Emergency Events Database (EM-DAT). Contact: [email protected]

EM-DAT contains data on the occurrence and impacts of over 27000 mass disasters worldwide from 1900 to the present day. CRED, the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters, has been active for over 30 years in the fields of international disaster and conflict health studies, with research and training activities linking relief, rehabilitation and development. The World's collective disaster memory must be preserved 07/05/2026

Dear EM-DAT user,

As you may know, EM-DAT is facing an urgent funding crisis. Following the suspension of USAID support, the future of this open-access service is at risk, and we could use your help to preserve it.
For decades, EM-DAT (https://www.emdat.be/) has been one of the world's leading references on disasters and their human and economic impacts. It supports scientific research, humanitarian response, policy-making, and global risk awareness. Losing EM-DAT could mean losing a vital part of our collective disaster memory.

How you can help:
Please sign and share the open letter, written by EM-DAT users in support of the database.: https://openletter.earth/the-worlds-collective-disaster-memory-must-be-preserved-66c88c44
Every signature strengthens the case for sustained funding. We kindly ask you to pass this message on to colleagues, partners, and anyone else who may be willing to add their name.
Thank you for standing with us to protect this shared resource.

Warm regards,
CRED-EM-DAT Team

Learn more about 🌍Global enhancement of 💥EM-DAT disaster data ⚙️interoperability here:https://files.emdat.be/2025/08/CredCrunch79.pdf

Last year, the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters team at the Institute of Health and Society (IRSS-UCLouvain) worked on improving disaster data interoperability by expanding the coverage of GLIDE unique disaster identifiers referenced in the Emergency Events Database EMDAT.

❓ GLIDE numbers are unique global identifiers issued by the Asian Disaster Reduction Center to improve emergency response coordination and data interoperability across disaster data systems. https://www.glidenumber.net/

📈 The update increased GLIDE number coverage in EM-DAT by 74%, facilitating easier comparison, development of disaster event linkage models, and the compilation of a multi-source consolidated disaster dataset for disaster risk research and management.
