Does low-oxygen training work for every athlete?
And what does it mean for you?
Low-oxygen therapy (also called altitude training or hypoxic training) involves training in an environment with less oxygen, as if you were at high altitude. This teaches your body to use oxygen more efficiently, which can improve your endurance. The good news is that many athletes genuinely benefit from it.
Most even notice a clear improvement in their performance.
Who benefits the most?
Endurance athletes (such as runners, cyclists, and triathletes) often see the greatest gains. This is because their performance depends heavily on how well their bodies can take in and use oxygen. This is known as VO₂max, the maximum amount of oxygen your body can take in and use per minute during intense exercise. And that is exactly where low-oxygen training can make a difference.
Of course, everyone responds differently.
But most athletes do notice an effect, each at their own level.
How big that effect is depends on factors such as your training level, your natural ability, and how and when you apply the training. For example, you can incorporate altitude training by doing a few sessions per week in a hypoxic environment in the weeks leading up to an important competition, or by temporarily staying at altitude and doing your easy endurance workouts there while performing your high-intensity sessions at lower elevation. This way, you give your body the stimulus to adapt without disrupting your overall training load.
The key is to discover what works best for you, so you can get the most out of your training and improve your performance.

What if the air you breathe during sleep could improve your performance?
More and more endurance athletes are using altitude tents to simulate mountain conditions from home. While you sleep in a low-oxygen environment, your body gradually adapts by improving oxygen transport and efficiency.
That adaptation can support endurance, recovery, and overall performance during training and competition.
But the key is consistency.
Altitude training is not about one night or one session. Your body needs time to respond and adjust. That’s why many athletes build it up gradually over several weeks as part of a broader training plan.
The smallest improvements often create the biggest difference on race day.
